Jennifer Lawrence Opens Up About Why She’s “Done” With the Press
Jennifer Lawrence says she’s grown tired of talking to the press.
The Oscar-winning actress explained her feelings in a recent interview with The New Yorker. She told Viola Davis that interviews can be draining. “Every time I do an interview, I think, ‘I can’t do this to myself again.’ I feel like I lose so much control over my craft when I have to do press for a movie,” she said.
Lawrence also talked about how she used to come across in past interviews. Looking back, she admitted, “Oh, no. So hyper. So embarrassing.” Fans once praised her for being funny and real, but some people online began to question whether her personality was genuine.
“Well, it is, or it was, my genuine personality, but it was also a defense mechanism,” she said. “And so it was a defense mechanism, to just be, like, ‘I’m not like that! I poop my pants every day!’”
She also mentioned Ariana Grande’s 2016 impression of her on Saturday Night Live. “I look at those interviews, and that person is annoying. I get why seeing that person everywhere would be annoying. Ariana Grande’s impression of me on SNL was spot-on,” Lawrence said.
The actress said the criticism made her feel rejected. “I felt—I didn’t feel, I was, I think—rejected not for my movies, not for my politics, but for me, for my personality,” she explained.
Overall, Lawrence seems to be taking control of her career and her public image. She is being careful about how much she exposes herself to the press while focusing on her work and personal boundaries.
