The film is based on the 1976 novel by Manuel Puig, as well as the Broadway musical that won multiple Tony Awards. The stage version was written by Terrence McNally with music by John Kander and Fred Ebb.
This isn’t the first time the story has been brought to film—an earlier version released in 1985 starred Sonia Braga and Raúl Juliá, and earned William Hurt an Academy Award.

At the heart of the story are two men sharing a prison cell. Valentín, a political prisoner, finds himself locked up with Molina, a window dresser convicted of public indecency. Over time, their tense relationship softens as Molina begins to tell Valentín the story of his favorite silver screen star, a glamorous diva named Ingrid Luna.
Jennifer Lopez plays Ingrid Luna, the Spider Woman herself, while Diego Luna plays Valentín and Tonatiuh takes on the role of Molina. Both Lopez and Luna are also serving as executive producers on the film.
Speaking to Variety in January 2025, Lopez opened up about how much she wanted to do a project like this. “I was waiting my whole life to be able to do a real big MGM Hollywood musical, and I finally got to do it,” she said.
She added, “I got into movies because of West Side Story. I thought I was going to do Broadway. I wanted to do musicals. I love musicals. My kids love musicals. My mother did. It was a dream fulfilled in having done the movie.”
Kiss of the Spider Woman will arrive in theaters on October 10, 2025. With both the poster and trailer already out, fans now have their first real look at Jennifer Lopez stepping into one of the most iconic roles of her career.
