Jenny McCarthy is opening up about a scary medical journey involving a “toxic” jaw infection and alarming eye growths that were eventually traced back to a hidden cause. The television personality, 53, shared her story during an episode of Maria Menounos’ Heal Squad podcast.

She described a “six months of living hell” that began with a root canal that was not properly cleaned, leading to a persistent and spreading infection. The situation escalated when the untreated bacteria moved into her jawbone, creating toxic pockets under her wisdom teeth.

Despite undergoing eight different surgeries and multiple root cavitations, the infections continued to return, leaving her baffled by her body’s inability to recover. During this time, McCarthy also began noticing strange, pus-filled growths appearing on her lower eyelid that would reappear just weeks after being surgically removed.

She recalled the frustration of the mounting symptoms, stating, “Now I’m into July, oozing infection coming through my eye, my mouth is being infected, we put the implants in, the implants were rejected, and I’m like, ‘What is going on!?’” It was only after her functional medicine doctor decided to look beyond the surface that they discovered she was suffering from mycotoxin poisoning, more commonly known as mold toxicity.

The diagnosis explained why her immune system was failing to heal and why she had become resistant to antibiotics over the previous year. McCarthy noted that while many people can process mold exposure, her existing health battles with candida and leaky gut made her particularly vulnerable.

She shared the terrifying warning her doctor gave regarding a specific type of mold in her system, saying, “[The doctor] goes, ‘If this thing that you’ve got crosses the blood-brain barrier, you’re gonna be in the hospital having seizures. I’m like, ‘Oh my God.’”

In the wake of this health crisis, McCarthy has remained a mainstay on television as a panelist for the fourteenth season of The Masked Singer, which aired its finale on April 1. She has been confirmed to return for the fifteenth season later this year alongside fellow judges Robin Thicke, Ken Jeong, and Rita Ora.

Outside of her judging duties, she continues to manage her vegan and cruelty-free beauty brand, Formless Beauty, which recently expanded its collection to include professional-grade makeup tools and lashes.

Looking ahead to the rest of the year, McCarthy is currently developing a new daytime talk show and video podcast hybrid in partnership with Warner Bros. TV Group’s Telepictures.

She was also recently seen attending the iHeartRadio Music Awards, where she spoke about her ongoing interest in health advocacy and her dedication to detoxing from her mold exposure.

By sharing the graphic details of her illness, she hopes to encourage others to investigate environmental factors when dealing with chronic, unexplained infections.
