Jesse Plemons and Kirsten Dunst Steal the Spotlight at the Actor Awards
Jesse Plemons opened up about the immense pressure of his latest role at the 32nd Annual Actor Awards on Sunday, March 1. The actor, who is nominated for Best Actor for his performance in the sci-fi black comedy Bugonia, admitted that playing conspiracy theorist Teddy Gatz was the hardest thing he has ever done in his career.
He described the character as a man possessed by a pure mission, despite the increasingly dangerous and awful things he does in the name of saving the planet from an imagined alien invasion.
Plemons recalled his shifting emotional response to the script, which he initially found to be a straightforward comedy. The first time I read the script, I really laughed a lot out loud, he noted, but a second reading months later made him realize the weight of the psychological challenge ahead.
I knew what a challenge it was going to be to bring him to life, he said, emphasizing that he wanted to find the humanity in a character defined by such extreme paranoia and fear.

Accompanying him to the ceremony was his wife, Kirsten Dunst, who has been a constant support throughout his busy awards season. The couple maintained their reputation as one of Hollywood’s most stylish pairs, with Plemons wearing a chocolate-colored Lardini tuxedo and Dunst opting for a sleek black Khaite dress topped with an oversized bow.
Dunst previously joked about their tendency to match on the red carpet, telling Town & Country that they often coordinate by accident. We unconsciously do this a lot, she said, though she insisted that one of us change if the looks become too identical.
The film that brought Plemons to the Actor Awards, Bugonia, is a remake of the South Korean cult classic Save the Green Planet! and marks his second collaboration with director Yorgos Lanthimos.
The story follows Teddy (Plemons) and his cousin Don, played by breakout star Aidan Delbis, as they kidnap a high-powered pharmaceutical CEO whom they believe is an extraterrestrial queen. Emma Stone stars as the abducted executive, Michelle Fuller, in a role that has also earned her significant awards buzz this season.
Plemons has been on a remarkable professional run lately, having also recently starred in the Netflix limited series Zero Day alongside Robert De Niro. He is currently in post-production on two of the biggest projects slated for this year.
First, he will join the Hunger Games universe in the prequel Sunrise on the Reaping, playing the younger version of the legendary Gamemaker Plutarch Heavensbee. The film, which also stars Elle Fanning and Kieran Culkin, is scheduled to hit theaters on November 20.
Additionally, Plemons has a leading role in Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s upcoming film Digger, which features an ensemble cast led by Tom Cruise. The project is described as a high-stakes black comedy and is set for an IMAX release on October 2.
Between these major studio films and his continued partnership with auteur directors like Lanthimos, Plemons has solidified his place as one of the most versatile actors of his generation.
His nomination this evening is a testament to a career that began as a child actor in Texas and rose to prominence through beloved television roles in Friday Night Lights and Breaking Bad.
Now an Academy Award nominee and Cannes Best Actor winner, Plemons continues to seek out characters that push his limits. As he noted during his red carpet interview, it is the challenge and the exhilarating nature of these complex roles that keep him coming back to the craft.
