The Savant was created by Melissa James Gibson and is based on a real-life story featured in a 2019 Cosmopolitan article by Andrea Stanley titled “Is It Possible to Stop a Mass Shooting Before It Happens?”
The story follows a woman, known as “the Savant,” who infiltrates online hate groups to prevent large-scale public attacks. In the series, Chastain plays Jodi Goodwin, also called the Savant, while Nnamdi Asomugha portrays Charlie Goodwin. Pablo Schreiber joins as Jason, with James Badge Dale and several others in recurring roles.
Jessica Chastain told Variety that her performance is designed to keep the real-life individual’s identity safe. “I wouldn’t want to look and behave exactly like her, because I want to keep her hidden,” she said.

The series is produced by Matthew Heineman through Fifth Season and Anonymous Content, with Kelly Carmichael and Chastain serving as executive producers.
Jessica Giles, editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan, and Brian Madden, senior VP of development for Hearst Magazines, are also producing, while Andrea Stanley consulted for the series.
Filming for The Savant began in April 2024 in New York, after an original schedule for September 2023.
The show promises a gripping look at the high-stakes world of preventing online radicalization and public violence, with Chastain going undercover in the new trailer that emphasizes suspense and tension.
