Jim Carrey’s Sci-Fi Comeback Just Got Real As ‘The Jetsons’ Movie Blasts Into Development
Hollywood has spent more than two decades trying to drag Orbit City into live action, and every attempt so far has stalled before cameras ever rolled. Robert Rodriguez and Conrad Vernon each separately tried to get a live-action or animated Jetsons movie off the ground over the past couple of decades, and both attempts eventually fell apart. The only feature the property has ever produced was the animated ‘Jetsons: The Movie’ back in 1990, which grossed just twenty million dollars.
The Hanna-Barbera favorite has always felt like a strange fit for the modern blockbuster machine, which may be exactly why studios kept circling it anyway. The 1962 series aired for decades and eventually spawned an animated feature, but a true live-action version has remained elusive despite repeated development pushes.
That changed this week when Warner Bros. Discovery made it official. The studio’s second quarter shareholder letter confirmed a live-action ‘The Jetsons’ movie starring Jim Carrey, twenty years after the first attempt to get the project moving. The confirmation matches what account DiscussingFilm shared on X, pointing followers directly to the studio’s own investor relations page as its source rather than a rumor mill. The letter lists the film alongside a slate of iconic intellectual property planned for release beyond 2027, including the Game of Thrones film ‘Aegon’s Conquest,’ the next ‘Matrix’ installment and the next Batman film.
Carrey’s attachment marks a significant moment in a career that briefly looked like it was winding down. Carrey had said in 2022, while promoting ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 2,’ that he was fairly serious about retiring, and he sat out projects for the next two years before returning. He came back for ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’ in December 2024, a film that pushed his career box office past six billion dollars. George Jetson looks like a gentler lift than some of his past roles, closer to his comedic straight man work than anything requiring hours in a makeup chair.
Colin Trevorrow’s name has hovered around this project since it first leaked last October, though the shareholder letter itself stayed quiet on directors. Variety had reported that Trevorrow was in talks to direct, with the filmmaker and Joe Epstein also in talks to write the screenplay. Trevorrow, known for helming the ‘Jurassic World’ trilogy, would be tackling a Space Age family sitcom instead of dinosaurs this time around, a tonal swing that has fans curious about his approach.
The Jetsons announcement lands inside a much bigger picture for Warner Bros. Discovery, which used the same letter to tout a packed 2027 slate. During the earnings call, CEO David Zaslav worked to ease investor concerns amid Paramount’s ongoing litigation, and he told analysts that Warner Bros. Discovery is performing at a very high level. With Carrey, Trevorrow, and a franchise fans have wanted reimagined for years now circling the same project, the revival finally has real momentum behind it.
