Jimmy Kimmel does not appear to be preparing to walk away from ABC after all. According to Deadline, Kimmel and Disney are now discussing a new one-year deal that would keep him behind the desk for another season.

The news comes at a time when late-night television is going through a major change. Traditional talk shows are dealing with smaller advertising budgets, changing viewing habits, and rising production costs. Several major programs have already been affected, making Kimmel’s contract talks part of a much bigger story about the future of late-night TV.

Kimmel’s current deal is set to expire in May, which helped fuel the recent rumors about his possible departure. However, Deadline reports that negotiations are active, meaning there is currently no indication that Kimmel is planning to leave the network. The discussions are still ongoing, though, and Disney is reportedly looking for the show to reduce its costs as part of any new agreement.

That demand should not come as a huge surprise given the financial pressure facing Disney’s television business. According to advertising data from Guideline, spending on late-night television ads dropped from $519.7 million in 2017 to $209 million in 2025. That is a huge decline, and it helps explain why networks are taking a harder look at expensive shows that once seemed like permanent parts of their schedules.

Kimmel’s own show has not escaped those changes. In 2025, Jimmy Kimmel Live! moved from a standard three-year contract to a one-year agreement. That shorter deal reflected the uncertainty surrounding the genre, but Kimmel has also had some good news. His ratings have reportedly improved since CBS ended The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, giving ABC another reason to keep him around.

Colbert is actually about to play an interesting role in the next chapter of Kimmel’s show. Kimmel recently announced that Stephen Colbert will appear on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on September 15. It will be Colbert’s first late-night appearance since The Late Show ended earlier this year. Kimmel had previously offered to let Colbert guest-host, but Colbert decided that the timing was not right.

The upcoming appearance could be an important moment for both hosts. Colbert’s show was canceled as CBS made major changes to its late-night lineup, while Kimmel is now trying to secure another year at ABC. Their reunion could give viewers a reminder of how much the late-night landscape has changed in a short period of time.

Kimmel has also had his own share of controversy while working through the changing television business.
