John Boyega has provided a fresh wave of hope for Star Wars enthusiasts who felt his character, Finn, never reached his full potential in the sequel trilogy. During a recent appearance at MEGACON Orlando, the actor confirmed that he has been in direct contact with Dave Filoni, the President and Chief Creative Officer of Lucasfilm.

When a fan during a panel discussion urged him to get Filoni on the phone to discuss a return, Boyega surprised the audience by responding, “I actually have, actually.” While he did not elaborate on the specific nature of these conversations, the admission alone marks a significant shift in the likelihood of Finn’s return to a galaxy far, far away.

This development is particularly noteworthy given Filoni’s current role as the primary architect of the franchise’s creative future. Many fans have long argued that Finn’s arc was sidelined after a promising introduction in The Force Awakens, a sentiment that Boyega himself has echoed in the past.

The actor has been famously candid about his dissatisfaction with how Disney handled his character and other diverse members of the cast in later installments. “What I would say to Disney is do not bring out a Black character, market them to be much more important in the franchise than they are, and then have them pushed to the side.

It’s not good. I’ll say it straight up,” he previously stated in a blunt 2020 interview. He noted that while the studio seemed to have a clear plan for the white leads, performers like himself and Kelly Marie Tran were left with significantly less to do.

Boyega also revealed that his initial expectations for Finn involved a much deeper connection to the Force and a closer partnership with Daisy Ridley’s Rey. “I think I assumed [Finn] was Force-sensitive from The Force Awakens script, or at least by the time I got to the end of The Force Awakens script,” he explained during a fan convention last year.

He had even imagined a scenario where the two characters might eventually turn against each other in a dramatic confrontation similar to Obi-Wan and Darth Vader. The possibility of a reunion is becoming more plausible as Daisy Ridley prepares to reprise her role as Rey in an upcoming feature film directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.

Ridley has expressed her own enthusiasm for working with Boyega again, though Lucasfilm has yet to make any official casting announcements regarding Finn. Given the high level of secrecy surrounding production schedules, fans are closely watching for any signs that these talks with Filoni will lead to a formal contract.

Aside from his potential return to Star Wars, John Boyega has been keeping a very busy schedule through the first quarter of the year. He recently finished filming the highly anticipated sequel Attack the Block 2, where he returns to the role of Moses, the character that first launched his career.

This project reunites him with director Joe Cornish and is expected to be a major release for later this year, blending sci-fi action with the gritty London setting of the original. He is also set to star in the upcoming historical drama The Book of Eli prequel series, which is currently in the middle of principal photography.

Boyega plays a younger version of the character originally portrayed by Denzel Washington, exploring the early days of the post-apocalyptic world. Between these high-profile projects and his voice work in several animated series, his career continues to thrive across multiple genres.

His influence in the industry as both a performer and an advocate for better representation ensures that whatever his next move is, it will be met with significant attention.
