John Boyega Shares How He Would Reimagine the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy – It’s Every Fan’s Dream
Fans were disappointed with the Star Wars sequel trilogy mainly because the story felt inconsistent across the three films.
Each director had a different vision, which led to plot points and character arcs that often contradicted each other. Many new characters, like Finn, Rey, and Poe, were introduced but didn’t get satisfying development.
Finn, in particular, was set up as a major hero but was largely sidelined in the story. The trilogy also relied heavily on nostalgia from the original films, which some felt overshadowed new storytelling. Pacing and plot issues, especially in The Rise of Skywalker, made the story feel rushed and uneven.
John Boyega played Finn, the stormtrooper-turned-hero, and fans were frustrated with how his character was treated. Boyega has openly expressed his disappointment with the handling of Finn’s arc throughout the trilogy.
He has also shared ideas about how he would have reimagined the trilogy to give characters like Finn more meaningful growth.
At Florida Supercon 2025, John Boyega gave fans a rare and honest look at how he would have handled the Star Wars sequel trilogy. He didn’t hold back when asked what changes he would make to The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, and The Rise of Skywalker.
“If I was a producer on Star Wars from the beginning, you would have had a whole completely different thing,” Boyega told the audience, according to Popverse. Unlike many stars involved in major franchises, he didn’t give vague or cautious answers.
Boyega emphasized that the original trilogy characters would still have been respected. “First of all, we’re not getting rid of Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, all these people. We’re not doing that. The first thing we’re going to do is fulfill their story, fulfill their legacy. We’re going to make a good moment of handing on the baton.”
He also shared his thoughts on how the new characters should have been developed. “Our new characters will not be OP’d in these movies. They won’t just grab stuff and know what to do with it. No. You’ve got to struggle like every other character in this franchise. I’d do that,” he said. Boyega wants the heroes to face real challenges, instead of feeling overpowered or too perfect.
Beyond character arcs, Boyega would have pulled more inspiration from existing Star Wars stories. “I’d look to the Old Republic stories and see what we can add to the continuation of that. I would definitely want to see Force Unleashed stories in there. I would try to expand the Star Wars universe as much as possible while respecting the lore. If we’re expanding the lore, we have to do it within the respective boundaries that stay true,” he explained.
Boyega was especially critical of Luke’s treatment in The Last Jedi, saying, “But Luke Skywalker wouldn’t be disappearing on a rock. Hell no. Standing there and he’s, like, a projector? I would want to give those characters way more, way more.”
