John Stamos opened up about his past marriage to Rebecca Romijn during a recent appearance on Bill Maher’s “Club Random Podcast” on December 29.

The actor and host discussed Stamos’ earlier days in Hollywood, which led to some candid reflections on his first marriage.

Stamos, who finalized his divorce from Romijn in 2005, revealed that some of her comments during their relationship left a lasting impact on him.

“There was a relationship that I had, that she said I was stupid, or said I wasn’t smart enough to be around her people and stuff. And I won’t say who it was, but you mentioned her a few minutes ago,” Stamos said, referring to Romijn. He added, “And I never sort of got over that.”

He admitted that while he wasn’t deeply involved in politics growing up, he made an effort to learn and understand the issues, saying, “But I was, you know, not super articulate in the political world. I didn’t grow up with politics in my family. And I learned everything from you, and I stand with you. Right where you’re at.”

Stamos has previously shared in his 2023 memoir how he struggled during his ten-year marriage with Romijn. He described feeling overshadowed as her career flourished: “As I’m lifting Rebecca up, I’m losing myself. She makes it clear that I’m the TV guy and she’s the newly minted star. … Somewhere deep inside, I start to believe it.”

He explained that while he was happy to see her succeed, he often put less focus on his own work, eventually feeling that she had “outgrown” him.

The couple met in 1994 at a Victoria’s Secret fashion show and got engaged on Christmas Eve 1997. They married on September 19, 1998, at the Beverly Hills Hotel, announced their separation in April 2004, and Stamos filed for divorce in August 2004. The divorce became final on March 1, 2005.

Since then, Stamos has moved on personally and professionally. He became the national spokesperson for Project Cuddle, a child-focused charity. He also found love again with model and actress Caitlin McHugh. The two got engaged in October 2017, married in February 2018, and welcomed their son in April 2018.

Stamos’ reflections show that past relationships, even high-profile ones, can leave deep emotional marks. His honesty about feeling undervalued highlights how challenging it can be to balance love and personal growth.
