Johnny Depp has had a busy few days. Just last week, he joined his Hollywood Vampires bandmate Joe Perry on stage at Aerosmith’s comeback concert at the Hollywood Bowl, playing guitar on “Train Kept A Rollin'” in front of a cheering crowd.

Now the actor is turning his attention back to the big screen. Depp stars as Ebenezer Scrooge in ‘Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol’, Ti West’s new take on Charles Dickens’ classic story, which Paramount is releasing in theaters on November 13.

Depp walked the red carpet on November 1 at a special screening of ‘Ebenezer’ in New York City. Photos from the event show him in a dark suit, a brown fedora, and blue-tinted glasses, posing in front of a backdrop reading “Johnny Depp is Ebenezer.”

Several of Depp’s co-stars joined him for the evening. Andrea Riseborough, who plays the Ghost of Christmas Past, and Tramell Tillman, who plays the Ghost of Christmas Present, were both in attendance, along with director Ti West.

According to Deadline, the event also drew a crowd of familiar faces, including Hayley Atwell, Britt Lower, Kyle MacLachlan, Shaboozey, Richard Kind and Depeche Mode’s Dave Gahan. Not every cast member made it, though, with Ian McKellen, Rupert Grint, Sam Claflin and Daisy Ridley absent.

‘Ebenezer’ features a screenplay by Nathaniel Halpern, adapted from Dickens’ famous novel. Depp plays Scrooge, the stingy and lonely old man who despises Christmas and anything that brings people happiness.

The film has an impressive ensemble. McKellen plays Jacob Marley, Grint plays Bob Cratchit, Ridley plays the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come, and Claflin plays Scrooge’s nephew Fred, while Arthur Conti plays a young Ebenezer.

The cast also includes Charlie Murphy as Mr. Fezziwig and Ellie Bamber as Isabel Fezziwig. Emma Watts produces the film through Green Bean Pictures. Paramount’s marketing has hinted that this won’t be a typical holiday movie. One recent trailer was described as chilling, with outlets calling it a very different Scrooge from the versions audiences know.

That fits West’s background. The filmmaker is best known for horror, and his involvement has had fans expecting a more gothic, unsettling version of the familiar ghost story. Production began in January, with filming taking place in Dublin and London.

The film marks a major studio role for Depp. TMZ noted that he was largely shunned by Hollywood for several years after his legal battle with Amber Heard, but fans gave him a warm welcome when he promoted ‘Ebenezer’ at Comic-Con in July.

Since then, excitement for the film has continued to build. Paramount has released featurettes highlighting Depp’s transformation into Scrooge, and tickets are now available on Fandango.

With less than 2 weeks until opening day, the New York screening helped kick off the final stretch of the film’s promotion. Depp’s appearance on the red carpet showed he’s ready to fully embrace the role.

Audiences will soon get to see whether this darker ‘Christmas Carol’ becomes a new holiday favorite. For Depp, the film could be an important step in his return to major studio movies.
