While he was always one of the most popular actors of his generation, Johnny Depp had made his way to the headlines when he instituted a $50 million defamation suit against his ex-wife Amber Heard for her Washington Post essay that claimed that she was the victim of domestic abuse and violence. He has since been awarded damages by a US jury as Depp is looking to build his name up in the film industry once more. In that regard, let’s get to know more about Johnny Depp.

Johnny Depp Net Worth

Johnny Depp has always been one of the most lucrative actors of all time because his name alone is enough to pull viewers into the movie theaters. His fame as an actor has allowed him to earn millions of dollars in salaries and bonuses throughout his career as he was able to build his name up well enough to command huge salaries from the movies he worked on.

After appearing in a lot of different successful and lucrative movies since the 90s, Depp, at his peak, was able to reach a net worth of around $900 million, especially when he was able to earn a lot of money from his work as Captain Jack Sparrow in five Pirates of the Caribbean movies. At that time, his finances were being managed by a company called The Management Group.

Johnny Depp was able to reach that sum because he is one of the highest-paid actors in Hollywood, as he was able to command $20 million per movie and 20% from backend sales. In fact, in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise alone, he was able to earn $300 million. Meanwhile, in backend earnings from Alice in Wonderland, he earned $55 million.

He first made a lot of money when he was working on 21 Jump Street during his younger years in the 80s. At that time, it was reported that he earned $45,000 per episode. Meanwhile, in 1995, he earned $5 million for Nick of Time and went on to earn the same amount for Donnie Brasco in 1997.

Johnny Depp broke out as a megastar in terms of his salary when he appeared in Pirates of the Caribbean for the first time in 2003 as he earned $10 million from that project. In the second movie, he earned a total of $60 million on his salary and backend earnings. Then, in the third movie, he was able to earn a total of $55 million.

In 2010, Depp once again worked with Disney for Alice in Wonderland, which was able to give him around $55 million. While his base salary for that film was lower, the fact that it earned over a billion worldwide allowed Depp to cash in on the backend earnings.

Additionally, Depp earned $18 million for Charlie and. The Chocolate Factory, $20 million for the Tourist, and $15 million for The Rum Diary, which is the movie that allowed him to meet Amber Heard.

In 2020, Johnny Depp was still able to earn $16 million from the third Fantastic Beasts movie. The contract stated that he was still going to be paid that amount of money regardless of what would happen. So, even though he was released from his role after the Amber Heard lawsuit exploded, he still earned money from the movie without even returning to play his role as Grindelwald.

As you can see, Depp was able to earn a lot of money from the different movies and projects he has been involved in ever since his career as an actor began. He is one of the most notable names in the industry because of his ability to bring in the audiences that have been following him since the 90s. As such, it is easy to see why he can command $20 million on his projects and why he was able to reach $900 during his peak as an actor.

However, in 2017, Depp filed a lawsuit against The Management Group when he claimed that his finances were grossly mismanaged. Depp said that the group had caused him to lose tens of millions of dollars and had nearly bankrupted him without his knowledge. However, The Management Group countered by claiming that, for more than a decade, their client had earned more than $650 million from his movies and projects but had lost a lot of money because of his overly lavish lifestyle.

The Management Group claimed that Johnny Depp lives a lifestyle that is too expensive for him to maintain because he could spend around $2 million a month on expensive wine, 40 staff members, private jets, and bodyguards. They also said that he spent a lot of money buying different properties around the world and even went as far as buying islands in the Bahamas. They estimated that his properties would total more than $100 million.

Of course, there was also the fact that Depp lost a lot of money due to the divorce and subsequent legal battles with Amber Heard. The divorce between the two was finalized in 2017 as Depp’s party settled to pay Heard $7 million. However, things didn’t end there because Heard claimed that she had been the victim of domestic abuse and violence during their marriage.

In 2018, a UK-based newspaper called Depp a wife beater, and that caused him to lose a lot of different roles due to the fact that no film company wanted to be associated with someone who was committing domestic violence. As such, lucrative projects like The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise and Fantastic Beasts were quick to drop him from their roster of actors.

In 2022, Johnny Depp went to trial with Amber Heard on the defamation lawsuit. After more than six weeks of a highly-publicized trial, the Virginia jury awarded him $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages, which were reduced to a cap of $350,000. However, the jury also said that Amber Heard had to be paid $2 million for damages due to the statements of Depp’s lawyers. This meant that he earned a total of around $8.35 million from the Depp vs. Heard case.

After all of the different problems that Depp faced financially and the issues he had endured with Amber Heard, he is now worth somewhere between $100 – 200 million. And it is more than possible for him to build his net worth up once more after he received a favorable verdict in the case against Amber Heard.
