Johnny Depp Reveals His Top Picks for “Perfect Cinema”
Johnny Depp once shared his all-time favorite films, calling them examples of what he considers “perfect cinema.”
Speaking to Screen Daily, the actor highlighted three movies that have stayed with him over the years: Dead Man, The Libertine, and Withnail & I.
Depp starred in both Dead Man and The Libertine, but his pick of Withnail & I shows his appreciation for classic British cinema.
About Bruce Robinson’s 1987 film, Depp said, “No film has ever made me laugh more, or filled me with so much joy… and dread, than Withnail & I!” He went on to call it “perfect cinema. As perfect as Chinatown, as The Godfather, as Time of the Gypsies. Genius.”
While Chinatown and The Godfather are widely known and praised for their storytelling and direction, Depp’s choice of Time of the Gypsies is less mainstream. The 1988 film, directed by Emir Kusturica, tells the story of a young Romany man with telekinetic powers who is drawn into petty crime, ultimately risking his future.
Critics have praised the film for its surreal and emotional storytelling, with Kusturica’s direction blending fantasy with social commentary in a way that has earned the film a lasting reputation in world cinema.
Depp also reflected on his own work, praising Dead Man, his 1995 collaboration with director Jim Jarmusch. He described it as an “epic visual poem,” adding, “It’s unlike anything else. A film which means many different things to many different people. It was an honour to be part of something so unique and profound.”

The actor also spoke highly of The Libertine, a historical drama directed by Laurence Dunmore starring John Malkovich, Rosamund Pike, and Rupert Friend. Depp explained, “It’s a film that a lot of people worked very hard on, and one that I am very proud of.”
The movie, which follows a 17th-century poet tasked with writing a play for King Charles II, received mixed reviews upon release, with some critics praising Malkovich’s intense performance while others found the story uneven. Over time, it has developed a small but devoted following.
