Johnny Depp has shared his strong opinions about actors who use their movie fame to launch a music career. Speaking to the Sydney Morning Herald during the 2015 Berlin Film Festival while promoting his spy comedy Mortdecai, Depp called the practice “sickening.”

“That whole idea for me is a sickening thing, it’s always just made me sick,” he said. Depp, a longtime guitarist, said he enjoys music but only as a personal passion, not as a way to capitalize on fame.

“I’ve been very lucky to play on friends’ records, and it’s still going. Music is still part of my life. But you won’t be hearing The Johnny Depp Band. That won’t ever exist,” he explained.

Depp also criticized the idea of fans attending shows just because an actor has appeared in movies. “I hate the idea, ‘Come see me play the guitar because you’ve seen me in 12 movies’. It shouldn’t be that way. You want the people who are listening to the music to only be interested in the music,” he added.

Although Depp did not name anyone directly, fans have speculated he might be referring to actors like Jared Leto, Jamie Foxx, or Michael Cera, all of whom pursued music careers alongside their acting work.

Despite his criticism, Depp continues to perform music professionally. In early 2023, he announced a tour with his band Hollywood Vampires and took to TikTok to thank his fans for their support at shows with Jeff Beck.

“To all of my most treasured, loyal and unwavering supporters. We’ve been everywhere together, we have seen everything together. We have walked the same road together. We did the right thing together, all because you cared. And now, we will all move forward together,” he said in a heartfelt video message.
