‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ Receives Lower Audience Score Than Any DCEU Film: “More and more people kept leaving the theatre”
It’s not often that a director achieves the remarkable feat of delivering both one of the highest-grossing R-rated superhero films and one of the worst superhero movies ever made.
However, Todd Phillips has experienced this with his Joker franchise. The first film was an unexpected success, while the sequel has turned out to be a major flop, unlike anything we’ve seen in quite some time.
Joker: Folie à Deux premiered worldwide this Friday, and to say it has been poorly received is an understatement. Both fans and critics agree that the film is a failure, with its Rotten Tomatoes score plummeting as more reviews come in.
Currently, the movie holds a dismal 33% rating from critics and a 34% approval rating from audiences. It has also received a “D” CineScore, marking it as the lowest-rated superhero film in history.
In comparison to DCEU films, Joker 2 boasts the lowest audience score by a significant margin. Critics, however, were slightly more lenient, as Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has a 29% score, followed by Suicide Squad at 26% and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom at 33%.
Financially, the movie is on track to be a major box-office disappointment. With a budget of $200 million—nearly three times that of the original film—it opened with just $7 million in domestic previews, nearly 50% less than its predecessor.
Predictions suggest it may only earn around $50 million during its domestic opening weekend. Amid this chaos, fans who attended the opening night screenings took to social media to share their reactions:
Many fans attribute the film’s failure to its musical elements. Both Lady Gaga and Todd Phillips have strongly denied that the movie is a musical, even while describing it as one.
Having seen the film, I can confidently say that it is indeed a musical—albeit an awkward one at that.
