Joker: Joaquin Phoenix Opens Up About The Sequel Possibility
In 2019, Joaquin Phoenix’s movie The Joker was one of the biggest successes of modern Hollywood. Grossed over a billion dollars worldwide against a relatively small budget of $70 million, it was the first R-rated film in history that reached a billion-dollar milestone. 11 Academy Award Nominations, winning Best Actor for Phoenix and Best Original Score.
With all that, and all the critical acclaim it received, the one would think the sequel would come at light’s speed, but two years since the movie’s release, there’s still nothing official, although there was a couple of rumors that sequel is in active development, but nothing legit.
Now, Joaquin Phoenix opened up about the possibility of the sequel. Is it in development? Or will it happen at all? In an interview with The Playlist, Phoenix said:
“I mean, I dunno. From when we were shooting, we started to —you know, uhh, this is an interesting guy. There are some things we could do with this guy and could [explore] further. But as to whether we actually will? I don’t know.”
In other words, Phoenix doesn’t know anything (or he’s just acting like it) about the sequel, but it seems that doors on the sequel aren’t completely closed yet. Phoenix received all the possible praise for his acting in the first movie and it’s quite certain he would be willing to return to the role, but who knows what bosses from Warner Bros. and DC are thinking about the idea of the sequel, especially considering that Joker wasn’t a typical comic book movie and that, in some fans’ opinions, it just works perfect on its own.
