Jon Watts’ Secret ‘Star Wars’ Western Series Comes To Light, and Its Future Is in Question
Lucasfilm has never been shy about developing projects behind closed doors, and a galaxy far, far away is full of shows and movies that never made it to the screen. Now a new report has uncovered a previously unknown ‘Star Wars’ series from one of the franchise’s most recent creative teams.
Jon Watts first moved into the ‘Star Wars’ universe as co-creator and showrunner of ‘Skeleton Crew’ with Christopher Ford, who had also worked with him on ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’. The Disney+ series premiered on December 2, 2024. Jude Law starred as Jod Na Nawood, and the show followed a group of kids lost in a dangerous corner of the galaxy aboard the pirate ship Onyx Cinder.
According to an exclusive report from Knight Edge Media, Watts and Ford were developing an entirely separate untitled ‘Star Wars’ series for Disney+. The project was described as a western, a clear departure from the swashbuckling pirate adventure of their first collaboration.
The report says the series was not a quiet passion project in its earliest stages. A full writers’ room was reportedly hired in January 2026 and worked through August 2026, which means the show spent about 8 months in active development.
The show was reportedly planned as an 8-episode season, matching the length of ‘Skeleton Crew’. No title, plot details, or cast have surfaced. When the outlet reached out, Lucasfilm declined to comment.
The outlet also stressed that this was not ‘Skeleton Crew’ Season 2. Many fans initially assumed any new Watts and Ford project would be a continuation of their first show, but this one was reportedly a standalone series with its own identity.
The biggest question is what happened to the project. Knight Edge Media says it is unclear whether the series has been temporarily shelved while Watts focuses on other work or whether it has been quietly canceled altogether.
No release date has ever been announced, and the project’s future remains uncertain. Until Lucasfilm addresses it, the western should be treated as an unconfirmed report rather than an official production.
The timing may not be a coincidence. Weeks after the writers’ room reportedly wrapped, news broke that Watts had been tapped to direct the first film in a new ‘Star Wars’ trilogy written by Simon Kinberg, a movie widely referred to as ‘Star Wars: Episode X’.
Dark Horizons reported that the trilogy is set after the events of ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’ and that Daisy Ridley’s Rey is reportedly expected to appear in some capacity. The project could reportedly enter production as early as 2027, though Disney has not yet officially greenlit it.
The Playlist pointed out that no one has confirmed one project displaced the other. Still, it’s easy to see why a theatrical trilogy would take priority over a Disney+ series in Watts’ schedule.
Stalled projects are nothing new for the franchise. The Playlist noted that ‘Rogue Squadron’ went through multiple abandoned versions, including one planned as a Disney+ series.
Meanwhile, ‘Skeleton Crew’ itself remains in limbo. A second season hasn’t been officially greenlit, but the show hasn’t been canceled either, leaving fans of Jod and the kids waiting for answers.
On the big-screen front, Shawn Levy’s ‘Star Wars: Starfighter’ is set to open in May 2027 and is currently the next ‘Star Wars’ film on the calendar. Watts’ trilogy is reportedly the franchise’s most advanced theatrical project after that.
A ‘Star Wars’ western from the team behind ‘Skeleton Crew’ is an exciting idea on paper, especially since the franchise has long drawn on frontier imagery. Whether fans ever see it may depend on how Watts’ film commitments play out.
For now, the untitled series joins a growing list of ‘Star Wars’ projects that exist mostly in reports. If Lucasfilm ever revisits it, the work already done in that writers’ room could give the show a head start.
Would you rather see Jon Watts and Christopher Ford’s reported Star Wars western become a reality or have Lucasfilm prioritize other projects?
