Jonathan Majors Talks Potential Comeback as Kang in the MCU

Jonathan Majors has left fans wondering about the future of his character Kang the Conqueror in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Majors first appeared in Loki Season 1 as He Who Remains, a variant of Kang, and later returned as Kang in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and again in Loki season 2 as a new variant, Victor Timely.

Originally, Marvel planned for Kang to be the main villain of the Multiverse Saga, setting him up as a major threat across multiple films.

However, Majors’ legal troubles in early 2023 cast uncertainty over his role in the MCU. The actor was arrested on assault charges involving his former girlfriend.

Although he was acquitted on some charges, a judge sentenced him to probation and a domestic violence intervention program. This incident led Marvel to reportedly move away from the Kang storyline.

At San Diego Comic-Con 2024, Marvel confirmed that the next Avengers movie, titled Avengers: Doomsday, would feature Doctor Doom as the main villain instead of Kang.

Despite the setbacks, Majors hinted at the possibility of returning. In a September interview with The Sun U.S., he said, “I cannot say anything about that. Well, it’s a Multiverse, so there’s always that. Always a lot of opportunity for that.” He also added that he was “very glad” that fans want him back.

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige clarified that the decision to focus on Doctor Doom had been in motion even before Majors’ legal issues.

“Even before what had happened to the actor, we had started to realize that Kang wasn’t Thanos,” Feige explained.

He added that Doctor Doom, thanks to Marvel’s acquisition of Fox, was the only villain who could fill the role of a massive threat like Thanos. “We had started talking about Dr. Doom even before we officially pivoted from Kang. In fact, I had started talking with Robert [Downey Jr.] about this audacious idea before Ant-Man 3 even came out,” Feige said.

Majors’ future in the MCU remains unclear, but the door to a potential return may still be open thanks to the vast possibilities of the Multiverse. Fans are eager to see if he will ever reprise his role as Kang in upcoming films.
