Josh Brolin Teases Possible Return of Thanos to the MCU
Over the span of ten years, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) meticulously built up the Infinity Saga, culminating in the emergence of the formidable Thanos. Introduced in the post-credit scene of ‘The Avengers’ in 2012, Thanos evolved into the central antagonist across various films, notably in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ where Josh Brolin delivered a remarkable performance. Despite a fitting conclusion, Brolin’s character resurfaced in alternate versions across different projects, meeting his demise each time.
While Kang the Conqueror is set to take the reins temporarily, Thanos remains etched in MCU history as its most iconic villain, even garnering his own Google Doodle—an emblem of his cultural impact. In a recent interview with ComicBook.com while promoting his latest movie, ‘Dune,’ Josh Brolin subtly hinted at the possibility of Thanos making a return.
You know, I hear kind of like through the grapevine, that they’re gonna bring him back. And there’s the What If…? series and that’s a different kind of Thanos and all that. But I don’t know in the Marvel world whether they’re going to bring him back.
The interviewer pointed out that Thanos holds the record for being the most frequently killed villain in the MCU, meeting his demise twice in ‘Avengers,’ multiple times in ‘What If…?,’ and falling victim to the Illuminati in ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.’ Brolin found amusement in this interesting tidbit.
I didn’t know that he was the most killed-off Marvel villain … You learn something new every day.
There are ongoing rumors suggesting the undead iteration of Thanos might surface in ‘Marvel Zombies,’ while another variant of the character could be showcased in ‘What If…?’ Season 3. Regarding the primary MCU storyline, it remains a possibility, especially within the Multiverse Saga. Given the MCU’s exploration of the multiverse, previous projects have hinted at numerous live-action versions of Thanos potentially making cameo appearances on the big screen.
