Josh Safdie’s ‘Marty Supreme’ Featuring Timothée Chalamet Gets a New Trailer as Movie Nears Release
A new trailer has been released for Marty Supreme, the upcoming sports comedy-drama directed and produced by Josh Safdie. The film stars Timothée Chalamet, who also co-produced the project.
The cast includes Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa A’zion, Kevin O’Leary, Tyler Okonma, Abel Ferrara, and Fran Drescher in supporting roles. The movie draws loose inspiration from the life of American table tennis player Marty Reisman.
Marty Supreme had its world premiere at the New York Film Festival on October 6 as part of a secret screening. It is set to hit U.S. theaters on December 25, through A24. According to Variety, the film’s budget is between $60 and $70 million, making it the most expensive production for the studio.

Set in 1950s New York City, the film follows table tennis star Marty Mauser as he pushes himself to achieve greatness. The story shows him facing personal and professional challenges while navigating the competitive world of ping pong.
Chalamet plays Marty, with Gwyneth Paltrow as Kay Stone and Odessa A’zion as Rachel. Fran Drescher plays Marty’s mother, while Tyler Okonma, Kevin O’Leary, and Abel Ferrara play other key roles. The film also features appearances by notable figures including Philippe Petit, Penn Jillette, Tracy McGrady, and Kemba Walker.
Safdie has long had an interest in table tennis, influenced by his grandparents and their community in New York’s Lower East Side.
In 2018, his wife and executive producer Sara Rossein introduced him to Marty Reisman’s autobiography The Money Player, which sparked the idea for the film. Safdie told audiences at the New York Film Festival that “Marty Supreme was written for [Chalamet] and his essence and his soul.” Chalamet began training in ping pong the same year and performed several of his own stunts for the film.
Filming began in New York City on September 23, 2024, and wrapped on December 5, 2024. Additional scenes were shot in Japan in February 2025. The film was shot on 35mm film by cinematographer Darius Khondji, and production design was led by veteran Jack Fisk.
Chalamet trained under ping pong experts Diego Schaaf and former Olympian Wei Wang. For some scenes, the director had him wear prescription glasses with contacts underneath to change his appearance.
