Julia Stiles (45) and Sean Patrick Thomas (55) Just Gave ‘Save the Last Dance’ Fans the Reunion They’ve Waited Decades For
For an entire generation of moviegoers, Julia Stiles and Sean Patrick Thomas will forever be Sara and Derek. The 2001 hit cast them as a teenage interracial couple in Chicago working together to get Stiles’ character ready for a Juilliard dance audition, and its club scenes and chair-heavy finale became early-2000s pop culture shorthand.
In the film, Sara is a ballet dancer who walks away from dance after her mother is killed in a car accident on the way to her first Juilliard audition, while Thomas’ Derek, a classmate who becomes her love interest, helps her fold hip-hop into her ballet and pushes her to give it another shot. That arc made the movie a sleepover staple, and the final audition scene has been lovingly memed ever since.
So when Stiles signed up for Season 35 of ‘Dancing with the Stars’, the jokes wrote themselves. Her pairing with Ezra Sosa prompted fans to quip that her ‘Save the Last Dance’ role gave her an unfair edge, though she clarified to Us Weekly that she’s grateful for everything the movie brought her but isn’t a professional dancer, explaining she was simply acting.
The payoff arrived on October 13, during the show’s “Super Bowl Night” episode, when the actors were seen together again 25 years after their movie first hit theaters. Stiles and Sosa chose a jazz routine set to Jennifer Lopez’s “Jenny From the Block,” with Sosa’s choreography lifted straight from the Juilliard audition scene, prop chair included.
While setting up chairs during rehearsal, Sosa jokingly apologized to the judges and explained the routine was meant for millennials. Stiles, meanwhile, framed the number as her long-awaited chance at a do-over of the much-memed routine.

The gamble paid off with the panel. Bruno Tonioli said it was her best dance of the competition so far, and the couple scored 33 out of 40, landing in fourth place for the night.
The real surprise came from the sidelines. Viewers spotted Sean Patrick Thomas in the wings with a jacket slung over his shoulder, and he could be seen smiling and grooving along as his former co-star danced.
In a video shared on the show’s official Instagram page, Thomas said he was thrilled to be there watching Julia perform, recalling what a great time they had making the movie and praising her for bringing it all back that night.

He kept the love going online, sharing a photo of himself with Stiles on the dance floor, calling her his old friend and saying she left no crumbs out there on what he described as an unforgettable night. The Shade Room paired the snap with a still from the original film, and the then-and-now comparison quickly spread across social media.
Fans were understandably emotional. One commenter called the cameo iconic and said millennials and xennials were cheering, while another joked that the pair are surely married with kids in the movie’s universe. Many also remarked on how little the duo seemed to have aged since starring in the film.
The cameo naturally reignited talk of a follow-up. Both actors have previously discussed how tricky a sequel would be, though Thomas remains open if a believable concept ever surfaces. He has told E! News that he struggles to come up with anything plausible, unless the characters somehow ended up married.
Stiles has offered her own playful pitches. She floated a reunion that opens with Sara and Derek bumping into each other at a grocery store, grown-up lives and all, and joked to E! about channeling Debbie Allen’s dance teacher character from ‘Fame’, banging a cane against the ballet barre.

Even Juilliard got in on the fun. In a TikTok with Sosa, Stiles read a tongue-in-cheek apology from the school over the mix-up about her famous role, and revealed that fans there had sent the pair official alumni gear.

For now, Thomas grooving along in the audience is about as close to a Sara-and-Derek sequel as fans have gotten. Judging by the reaction, it was more than enough to make the ballroom feel like Stepp’s again.
