With the new Junji Ito animated adaptation that has been released today, called Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre we are going to take a look at some of his iconic characters. His distinct drawing style and storytelling abilities are the reason why so many fans all over the world are obsessing over his work.
A lot of people say he started a cult-like following, especially among horror fanatics. The way he creates a certain atmosphere it seems like not many authors can do that. In his personal life, he is quite the opposite, he has a very positive energy and even finds that scary movies and other media can be funny. Another reason why Junji Ito is good at what he does is having a very good understanding of phobias, and how to use them to his advantage.

Tomie Kawakami (Tomie)

Tomie Kawakami is the titular protagonist of the Junji Ito Tomie series. Her character is most often described as an incredible beauty. It is never really explained what kind of creature she is, but we know that she can create an obsession with other people, mostly men and that she has the ability to clone herself. Creatures that have similar abilities, and that resemble her are also just called Tomie. Because of the immense popularity of this series, there have been many animated and live-action adaptations.
Fuchi (Fashion Model)

Fuchi is the main antagonist of Ito’s short stories Fashion Modan and Rumors. She is a scary-looking cannibalistic monster who likes to play with her victims before she eats them. Interestingly, she also works as a model, making this the perfect trap for her unassuming victims. When she is hunting or working she has a very stoic presence and is very polite. After a while, when her victims let their guard down, she starts to isolate them one by one and slowly kills them.
Tooru Oshikiri (Hallucinations)

Tooru Oshikiri is a young high school student that is experiencing hallucinations. Throughout the story, we are not completely certain if what he is seeing is true or not. Because of this he often tries to manage his fear and even pushes himself to feel it so he doesn’t react or acknowledge his hallucinations. He comes from a wealthy family and what ultimately doesn’t help him with his issues is that he lives alone in a secluded area, away from everyone.
Souichi Tsujii (Souichi’s Diary of Delights)

Souichi Tsujii has appeared in many of Junji Ito’s short stories in a main character role. His character has a dislike for his brother Koichi and cousin Michina. His sister and he are constantly trying to scare them but sometimes that backfires for them. Interestingly, he marries the character we mentioned earlier, Fuchi, and even has a son with her. Later on, when he tried to leave her, she of course wouldn’t let him.
Daisuke Mineishi (Remina)

Daisuke Mineshi’s story starts when he met Remina Oguro, a young girl running away from a cult. At first, he tried to make her leave his property, but eventually, he takes a liking to her. The doomsday cult finds her once more and wants to bring her back. Daisuke decides to help her and try and save her from this cult that essentially wanted her dead.
Tadashi (Gyo)

Tadashi is the boyfriend of Kaori and the main protagonist of the Gyo series. The story follows him and his girlfriend, everything seemed fine until one day Kaori noticed that Tadashi’s breath smelled bad. He tries to fix this, but even though he brushes his teeth twice a day, it still didn’t help. Later on, it is revealed that there is a type of fish infecting their town with its awful stench.
Oba Yozo (No Longer Human)

Oba Yozo is the main character of the Junji Ito manga series called No Longer Human, which is based on a novel by Osamu Dazai. The story follows the young boy Oba Yozo who has a lot of problems with anxiety and a lack of social skills. This frustrates him since he can’t function the way he’s supposed to, or at least that’s what his peers believe. He ends up playing a personality that ultimately does not match his own, and even then he is questioned because of it.
Shuichi Saito (Uzumaki)

Shuichi Saito is one of the main characters of the “Spiral series” better known as Uzumaki. He is the boyfriend of Kirie Goshima and quite the fearful type. Even though he is quite timid, given a chance to protect his girlfriend he would take it. Throughout the story, he is dealing with a severe case of depression and different stages of mania because of his parent’s death.
Tsukiko Izumisawa (Tomie)

Tsukiko Izumisawa is aone of the main characters in the Junji Ito’s Tomie manga series. Tsukiko is a high school student, and in her spare time, she secretly takes compromising photos of boys from her school. She would then sell the pictures to her flustered classmates. Later on, she is discovered by Tomie who reveals what Tsukiko is doing. After that Tsukiko gets suspended from school for breaking the school rules and misusing the property of the photo club.
Remina Oguro (Remina)

Remina Oguro is the daughter of the scientist who discovered a planet that consumes other planets. The Hellstar, as they called it, notices the scientist was looking at it and locked on the Earth’s location, wanting to destroy it. This created a worldwide panic and lead to a creation of a doomsday cult. The cult wanted to sacrifice Remina so they might survive. The cult killed her father and started chasing after Remina.
Kirie Goshima (Uzumaki)

Kirie Goshima is the main character and the protagonist of the Junji Ito manga series Uzumaki. Her character is very mature even though she is a high school student. When her town is hit by a curse of the spiral, she was affected by it as well. Her hair curled up into spirals which drew more attention to her, and that’s something she hates. She is very protective of her younger brother, who does annoy her on occasion in his brotherly ways.
Frankenstein (Frankenstein)

The character of Dr. Frankenstein is a Junji Ito adaptation of the original novel by Mary Shelley. He covers the same topics as Shelley does when humans try to play gods and then end up going way too far. His Frankenstein does the same thing, Ito just goes a bit further visually. The creature that Frankenstein creates has Ito’s drawing style stamp written all over it. His version of the creature is unbelievably tall and slender, with a very disturbing-looking face, it would make anyone shiver after seeing it.
Mimi (Mimi’s Ghost Stories)

Mimi is the titular protagonist in the Junji Ito’s Mimi’s Gost Stories. Mimi is a character who is closely connected to the spirit world. When she gets herself in all types of strange situations she always seems to come out of them unharmed.
Kaori (Gyo)

As we mentioned earlier, Kaori is Tadashi’s girlfriend, and one of the main characters from the Gyo series. She would always say how she doesn’t like Tadashi being around other women, this made her jealous. Interestingly, she had a very sensitive sense of smell so she would know when he’s been around a woman. Because of the fact, she’s sensitive to smell she was one of the first victims of the poisonous fish crisis in their town.
Owaki (The Enigma of Amigara Fault)

Owaki sets off to climb Amigara Mountain, he meets Yoshida while on his hike. Yoshida says that she is looking for a hole that is shaped like hers, Owaki doesn’t believe this. Later on, Yoshida really finds it and Owaki tries to persuade her not to go near it.
Miss Kikuchi (Black Paradox)

Miss Kikuchi or also known by her online name Marusou, is one of the main characters from the Black Paradox series. She is a nurse who believes she can see the future, she has visions, and this is one of the reasons why she decided to end her life.
