Justin Timberlake’s Upcoming Apple TV Docuseries Has a Surprising Guest in Janet Jackson
Few pop culture moments have been replayed, dissected, and argued over as relentlessly as the 2004 Super Bowl halftime show. Timberlake pulled away part of Jackson’s outfit mid-performance, exposing her breast and setting off a national controversy. The fallout shaped both careers, though in very different directions.
For years, the two stars took divergent paths from that night. Timberlake appeared to escape the backlash and was invited back to perform at the Super Bowl twice afterward. Jackson, by contrast, suffered career and reputational damage in the aftermath.
Now, the moment may get another airing, and this time Timberlake is the one steering the project. Variety reports that he is set to release a four-part docuseries on Apple TV in December, described as a “tell-all” by three sources. One source says the series will feature Jackson discussing the infamous “wardrobe malfunction.”
That is not the only topic reportedly on the table. Another source says Timberlake addresses some of former girlfriend Britney Spears’ recent comments as well. The series is directed by Fisher Stevens, though further details were not available when the report was published.
Notably, nothing here has been officially confirmed. Representatives for Timberlake, Jackson, and Apple either declined to comment or did not respond to Variety’s repeated requests. That leaves plenty of room for speculation about how much Jackson will actually say and how the project frames the past.
Timberlake and Apple are not strangers. His relationship with the streamer dates back to 2021, when he starred in the Apple Original film ‘Palmer.’ The timing also fits a quiet stretch for the singer, who made a guest appearance at Jay-Z’s concert in Paris last month but has otherwise been off the radar since his ‘Forget Tomorrow’ world tour supporting ‘Everything I Thought It Was,’ released in March 2024.
The docuseries also arrives after years of public reckoning. In February 2021, Timberlake publicly apologized to both Jackson and Spears, acknowledging his role in the controversies surrounding the two women. That apology came after a new documentary chronicled his behavior toward the two stars.
That earlier documentary was an FX project that Jackson did not participate in. After ‘Malfunction: The Dressing Down of Janet Jackson’ premiered, Timberlake reportedly faced fresh backlash. Jackson later told her own story in the Lifetime docuseries ‘Janet,’ where she said she and Timberlake had “moved on” from the controversy, and that she wanted the world to do the same.
That history is what makes her reported involvement here so intriguing. Jackson has already told this story on her own terms, so seeing her appear in a project built around Timberlake raises obvious questions about what each of them wants audiences to take away. Whether the series offers real accountability or a carefully managed look back is something viewers will have to judge for themselves.
Stereogum’s take captures the curiosity well, noting that Timberlake appears to have creative control over the project, so it will be interesting to see what he explores and how much responsibility he takes for past missteps. The same piece points out that there are likely plenty of stories from the height of *NSYNC and his solo superstar years, too.
For now, the project’s December timeline and its guest list are the main things fans have to go on. Until Apple makes an official announcement, the biggest question is not just what Janet Jackson will say, but how Timberlake chooses to present it.
