KPop Demon Hunters is an animated musical urban fantasy produced by Sony Pictures Animation and released on Netflix. Directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, the movie was co-written by them along with Danya Jimenez and Hannah McMechan, based on a story conceived by Kang.
The voice cast includes Arden Cho, Ahn Hyo-seop, May Hong, Ji-young Yoo, Yunjin Kim, Daniel Dae Kim, Ken Jeong, and Lee Byung-hun. The story follows a K-pop girl group called Huntr/x who secretly fight demons while facing off against a rival boy band, the Saja Boys, whose members are secretly demons themselves.
The movie was inspired by Kang’s Korean heritage, blending mythology, demonology, and K-pop to create a visually unique and culturally rich story. Production began in March 2021 at Sony Pictures Animation, with animation handled by Sony Pictures Imageworks.
The visual style draws on concert lighting, music videos, editorial photography, anime, and Korean dramas. The soundtrack features original songs by various artists, with a score by Marcelo Zarvos.
Critics have praised the movie, giving it a 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The site’s consensus reads, “Animated with infectious energy and vibrant colors, KPop Demon Hunters is jaunty family entertainment with a terrific soundtrack to boot.” Metacritic rated it 76 out of 100 based on six critics, indicating “generally favorable” reviews.
