Kaitlyn Dever, who recently joined HBO’s The Last of Us, says fans should be ready for an emotional and intense ride in the show’s upcoming third season. Dever plays Abby, a major character from the video game that the show is based on. While some fans love Abby, others see her as controversial, and her arrival in the series has already stirred strong reactions.

One of the most dramatic moments of Season 2 is the death of Joel, played by Pedro Pascal. It’s a key turning point in the story and happens early in the season. Dever said filming that scene was very emotional for her and that she relied on Pascal to get through it. “I’ve never felt so carried by another actor in my life,” she said. “We were really supporting each other… it was such a pivotal moment for both of these characters.”

After the scene aired, some viewers were upset, especially fans of Joel’s character. Dever appreciated how Pascal tried to ease the tension by posting behind-the-scenes photos, reminding everyone that what happens in the show is fiction. “He posted behind-the-scenes photos as if to remind people this is fiction,” she explained.

Looking ahead, Dever said that Season 3 will bring even more emotional challenges. Though she hasn’t been told many details yet, she shared that series co-creator Craig Mazin gave her a clear warning. “Craig just keeps saying to me, ‘You have no idea what’s to come for Season 3. Just buckle up,’” she said.

The role of Abby has been tough on Dever, both mentally and physically. She’s had to deal with heavy scenes and a demanding shoot while also coping with the recent loss of her mother. Despite the personal challenges, Dever’s performance is already getting strong praise from fans and critics, with many calling it one of the best of her career.

The Last of Us is available to stream now on HBO Max, and Season 3 is already being talked about as one of the most emotional chapters yet.
