Few filmmakers have had a breakout year like Kane Parsons. The young creator, who first built a huge following with his eerie ‘Backrooms’ YouTube series, turned that online mythology into one of the biggest horror hits of the year with A24’s ‘Backrooms’.

The numbers were staggering for a film made for under $10 million. ‘Backrooms’ opened to $118 million worldwide, A24’s biggest debut ever, and went on to earn more than $394 million globally, making it the highest-grossing A24 film to date and the 5th-highest-grossing independent film of all time.

With that kind of success, fans have been eager to hear what’s next. Now Parsons has teased new characters for ‘Backrooms 2’, saying there are figures in the ‘Backrooms’ universe he hasn’t introduced yet and ideas he still hasn’t gotten to.

He also made it clear that the franchise won’t run forever. “There is an end to it. You can’t go on forever,” Parsons said during an appearance on The Kyle Buchanan Show, adding that at some point he would know when the story had reached its limit.

He didn’t name any of the new characters or say where they might appear. Even so, the comments suggest he has much more of this world to explore before it ends. This isn’t the first time Parsons has talked about the franchise’s conclusion. In an interview with Deadline at the Zurich Film Festival, he said the ending had always been part of the plan, but that finding the right way to package it had been the hard part.

He has repeatedly said that a limited series would be the ideal format for reaching what he calls the “main ending.” According to Parsons, the story has followed a very set arc from the beginning, and he’s excited to see it through.

He also hinted that he has a few things he’d like to discuss soon. That fits with his earlier comments that the YouTube series will continue and that he’s interested in television. Reports earlier this fall said Parsons had signed with A24 to direct a sequel, with an announcement expected soon.

That means ‘Backrooms 2′ is still more of an expectation than a confirmed project. Parsons’ new comments leave plenty of room for it, though. ‘Backrooms’ stars Chiwetel Ejiofor as Clark, a furniture store owner and failed architect, with Renate Reinsve as his therapist, Dr. Mary Kline. The cast also includes Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, Lukita Maxwell, Avan Jogia and Krista Kosonen.

The film premiered at Santa Monica’s Aero Theatre in May before opening in US theaters on May 29. A24 later released ‘Backrooms: Everything Must Go Edition’ in theaters with about 15 minutes of extra footage.

Its success also made history for Parsons himself. He became the youngest filmmaker to top both the US and global box office, beating the record previously held by Josh Trank’s ‘Chronicle’.

Many horror franchises keep going long after their stories have run out of steam. Parsons’ plan to give ‘Backrooms’ a clear ending sets it apart and suggests he’s thinking about the whole story, not just the next installment. For fans, that means new characters and new mysteries are still to come, but they’ll lead somewhere. When the end arrives, it seems Parsons will be ready for it.
