Kat Dennings Recalls Her Date With Drake After He Slid Into Her DMs
Kat Dennings recently revisited the details of her high-profile date with Drake while appearing with Chelsea Handler, describing a scene that felt more like a state operation than a casual outing.
According to Dennings, the logistics of the evening were intense, as she noted that we had sushi but were constantly being followed by a black SUV with his security. She admitted to Handler that the experience was fairly jarring, remarking that it was overwhelming the amount of security present for a simple meal.
This was not the first time the actress had to set the record straight regarding her history with the Canadian rapper. Back in 2013, Dennings provided a deeper dive into how the connection originally formed and the digital chaos that followed.
She clarified that the interaction began when she was roughly 19 years old and working on an independent film in Toronto. Hey, listen: Let’s get this right for one second, she told the audience during that earlier interview, explaining that the public firestorm began after Drake sent a supportive tweet her way.
What happened was, and I’m glad we’re talking about this, Drake was super nice and said something on Twitter about me, Dennings recalled. She explained that she was initially oblivious to the post until she returned home to find her social media metrics had exploded.
When I got home, I had, like, 50,000 new followers out of nowhere, she noted, but the surge in popularity was far from a warm welcome. Instead, the actress found herself at the center of an online whirlwind fueled by protective fans.
Dennings quickly realized that many of these new followers were actually critics who were less than thrilled at the prospect of her dating the music icon. They were like, ‘F*** you, Kat Dennings’ and ‘You can’t take Drake from me. He’s mine,’ she said of the messages she received.
Despite the aggressive reaction from the public, she maintained that her personal interaction with the star was nothing but positive. And then I realized what had happened, and then we started talking and he’s super, super nice. He’s a lovely person. He’s a nice man, she added.
While these stories of past dates continue to charm fans, Dennings is currently focusing her energy on a massive return to the world of television. She is presently starring as Riley Parker in the ABC sitcom Shifting Gears, which premiered in early 2025 and was recently renewed for a second season.
In the series, she plays an estranged daughter who moves back in with her widowed father, played by comedy legend Tim Allen. The show has become a significant hit for the network, recording record-breaking viewership across various streaming platforms like Hulu and Disney+.
In addition to her work on Shifting Gears, Dennings has recently made headlines as her previous hit series, 2 Broke Girls, found a massive second life on Netflix, where it surged into the global top ten. The actress has expressed a strong interest in potentially rebooting the series to provide fans with the proper conclusion they were denied when the show was abruptly canceled years ago.
Alongside her live-action roles, she continues to lend her voice to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, reprising her beloved character Darcy Lewis in recent episodes of the animated series What If…? on Disney+.
