Katherine Heigl (47) Returns to the Public Eye for Dog Rescue Gala After 2 Years
Katherine Heigl recently stepped back into the public eye, making a rare and vibrant appearance at the Wine, Women & Shoes charity event benefiting Big Dog Ranch Rescue. Held on Sunday, March 8, at Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida, the gathering marked the actress’s first red-carpet engagement in over two years.
Accompanied by her mother, Nancy, the 47-year-old star looked radiant in a colorful, patterned dress, which she paired with bold royal blue heels and a bright yellow quilted Chanel bag.
The actress spent time mingling with guests, including renowned dog trainer Cesar Millan, and spoke passionately about the importance of animal advocacy and how important it truly is.
She highlighted that her personal focus aligns closely with the mission of the Big Dog Ranch Rescue, particularly regarding the overpopulation of shelters. “Our biggest goal right now really is to diminish the number of unwanted litters coming into this country, which is what is overcrowding our shelters,” she noted during the event.
“It’s not the shelter’s fault, and it’s not the fault of the shelter’s workers. It’s that our country is overrun with puppy-mill breeders.” This event was a notable departure from the quiet life she has cultivated in Utah, where she relocated years ago to raise her three children: Naleigh, 17, Adalaide, 13, and Joshua, 9.
The actress has previously been candid about the challenges of balancing a high-profile Hollywood career with motherhood, especially during her earlier years in Los Angeles. She has often spoken about her struggle to bond with her eldest daughter, Naleigh, due to an intense filming schedule shortly after the child’s adoption in 2009.
“I never saw that baby,” she revealed in a past interview about the difficult period while filming Life As We Know It. “I was always afraid that I had missed that opportunity to really bond with her and that she didn’t love me—in that moment.”
Relocating to a ranch in Utah provided her with the space to prioritize her family and step away from the relentless pressure of the entertainment industry. “I could kind of decompress and let that hustle part of me go—a little bit,” she explained.
In recent years, the former Grey’s Anatomy star has successfully transitioned from an on-screen powerhouse to a dedicated entrepreneur. She launched Badlands Ranch, a premium pet food and supplement brand inspired by her life in Utah, which has seen remarkable success since its 2022 debut.
The brand has become her primary professional focus, allowing her to fund animal rescue initiatives while remaining close to her home and family. While she has stepped back from consistent acting roles, she is not entirely closed off to returning to the screen for the right project.
She has been in active discussions regarding a potential sequel to her beloved 2008 romantic comedy, 27 Dresses, though she remains selective about the timing. “I think that we’re in talks about a 27 Dresses sequel, which, if done right and with that cast I love so much, would definitely be something I’d be willing to sort of compromise the mom time to do,” she recently shared.
Despite her occasional public appearances, her main priority remains her life on the ranch. Her days are now filled with caring for her many animals, including chickens, goats, and horses, and enjoying the privacy that rural Utah offers.
