For more than a decade, fans have heard whispers about the mission that let John Wick walk away from his deadly profession, and now an animated ‘John Wick’ prequel is set to finally show it. The project was first revealed as Lionsgate’s first animated take on the character, a prequel set before the events of the original 2014 film.

The legend of that mission has hung over the whole franchise. In ‘John Wick: Chapter 2’, John is bound by a blood oath “marker” to Santino, who had helped him complete the “impossible task” that allowed him to retire and marry Helen. Until now, audiences have only known it through hints and dialogue.

That’s about to change in a big way. Keanu Reeves has officially closed a deal to return as John Wick in Lionsgate’s animated prequel, and Lionsgate has greenlit the previously teased project, with Reeves set to produce and lend his voice.

The story goes straight to the heart of Wick’s origin. It recounts how Wick completes the Impossible Task, killing all of his rivals in one night, to free himself from his obligation to the High Table and earn the right to be with the love of his life, Helen.

That’s exactly what fans have been waiting to see. Back when the project was first announced, Lionsgate motion picture chair Adam Fogelson told IndieWire that “there is no ‘John Wick’ story fans are clamoring for more than the ‘Impossible Task,'” adding, “we are beyond excited to see what John Wick can do in animation.”

The film is in seasoned hands behind the camera. Shannon Tindle, an animation veteran best known for Netflix’s ‘Ultraman: Rising’ and ‘Kubo and the Two Strings’, will direct from a script by Ryan and Kaz Firpo, who co-wrote Marvel’s ‘Eternals’.

Tindle’s recent work has earned plenty of attention. ‘Ultraman: Rising’, which he directed for Netflix, was nominated for an Annie Award. His track record with visually ambitious animation makes him a promising fit for a franchise famous for its stylish action.

Fans worried about the franchise’s identity can relax. The core Wick team, including Reeves, Thunder Road’s Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, and 87Eleven Entertainment’s Chad Stahelski, is on board, along with newcomer Point Grey Productions, co-founded by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg.

Production is moving forward, though plenty is still under wraps. The film is in preproduction, but Lionsgate has yet to announce a release date, animation studio, or additional voice cast.

The animated movie is just one piece of Lionsgate’s plans. A fifth live-action John Wick is in development, along with a standalone adventure built around Donnie Yen’s blind assassin Caine.

The franchise has also tested spinoffs before. ‘Ballerina’ grossed approximately $137 million globally, making it the second-lowest-grossing movie in the John Wick franchise. Going back to Wick himself, even in animated form, could be the studio’s way of keeping its biggest star at the center of the story.

The new format opens up plenty of creative possibilities. The live-action films have already delivered incredible action sequences, but animation could push the violence, choreography, and visual style in directions that would be difficult to pull off in live action.

With Reeves voicing the character and the Impossible Task finally getting its full telling, the Baba Yaga’s most mysterious chapter is about to become his next big-screen adventure.

Are you more excited to see the John Wick Impossible Task brought to life in animation or get another live-action movie?
