Keanu Reeves has given fans a hopeful update about the long-awaited Constantine 2. After years of uncertainty, it sounds like the sequel to the 2005 supernatural thriller is finally gaining traction.

In a recent chat with Fandango, the 61-year-old actor revealed that things are moving along behind the scenes. “Fingers crossed. Another draft of the script came in. We’re gonna take it to the studio and hopefully they like it too,” Reeves said.

His comment marks one of the most encouraging signs yet that the project is alive and making progress.

The journey to a Constantine sequel has been a long one. Talks about continuing John Constantine’s story go back more than a decade.

Back in 2012, Guillermo del Toro even signed on to create a Justice League Dark movie that would feature Constantine, though it never came to life. Reeves later said in 2019 and 2021 that he’d be happy to return to the role if given the chance.

It wasn’t until September 2022 that Deadline Hollywood confirmed Warner Bros. was officially developing Constantine 2. Reeves would reprise his role as the cynical demon hunter, with Francis Lawrence returning as director and Akiva Goldsman writing the script. J.J. Abrams and Hannah Minghella also came on board to produce the film.

In early 2023, Reeves shared that he had spoken with DC Studios co-head James Gunn, who told him the sequel was still happening. The film is said to be part of DC’s Elseworlds line, which allows stories to exist outside the main DC Universe.

Lawrence later said that he, Reeves, and Goldsman were meeting to shape the story further after the writers’ strike ended. Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura confirmed in 2024 that the script had been completed, marking another big step forward.

By February 2025, Reeves said that he and Lawrence had finally crafted a story they were proud of and presented it to DC Studios, who approved them to move forward with the script.

He explained that the sequel will stay in the same world as the original movie but with even greater challenges for Constantine. Lawrence also mentioned that after years of development, they are closer than ever to making it happen.

Still, not everything has been easy. Actor Peter Stormare, who played Lucifer in the first film, spoke earlier this year about the creative tug-of-war surrounding the project. In an interview, he explained that Reeves wasn’t satisfied with some of the earlier drafts. “It’s a lot of back and forth, because… I think Keanu [Reeves] is not so happy with the scripts and usually what comes out of the studios,” Stormare said.

He added that the studio wanted bigger, flashier action scenes, while Reeves wanted to preserve the dark, spiritual tone that made the first movie a cult hit.

“Keanu says, ‘I’ve done John Wick. This movie is spiritual. It’s about demons and regular people. And I wanted to keep it that way,’” Stormare shared. He also joked that he’d like to reprise his role as Lucifer but admitted it would be harder to match the original performance after more than a decade.

Although fans have been waiting a long time, it finally looks like Constantine 2 is moving closer to reality. Reeves’ passion for the character and his push to keep the film true to its roots might be exactly what fans have been hoping for.

What do you think about Keanu Reeves returning as John Constantine? Would you like Constantine 2 to stay dark and spiritual like the first movie, or should it explore something new? Share your thoughts in the comments.
