Keira Knightley is taking strong steps to protect her children from the dangers of social media. The actress, known for her roles in Atonement and The Woman in Cabin 10, revealed on BBC Radio 4 that she has banned social media at home for her daughters, Edie, 10, and Delilah, 6.

Knightley described online platforms as “terrifying” and “unregulated,” explaining her desire to keep her children away from such spaces. “In our house, we’ve got a no social media thing,” she said. “They’re not allowed on devices if we can’t see what they’re looking at…”

The actress admitted that she’s unsure how long this rule will last or whether it’s the perfect approach, given the prevalence of technology today.

She and her husband, musician James Righton, are relying in part on their school, which promotes a “social media-free” childhood. “Most of the parents at the school…were in agreement that that’s the way forward,” Knightley explained, though she acknowledged that not all families follow the same rules.

Knightley also voiced a wish for more external regulation of online platforms. “I would love it if some regulation came in so it wasn’t all put on the parents,” she said, noting that social media rules can vary greatly depending on a household’s approach.

Knightley’s approach is a thoughtful attempt to give her children a safer, more controlled environment in a world where social media can be overwhelming and unfiltered. Do you think social media should be banned for young kids at home? Share your thoughts in the comments.
