Keira Knightley Reveals Shocking Paparazzi Abuse and Her Five-Hour Protest Against Them
Keira Knightley recently shared a shocking look at her early years in the spotlight during an interview with The Times of London.
The actress, who rose to fame at 18 with Disney’s “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise, described intense harassment from paparazzi that made her daily life feel like a battle.
“It was mostly ‘wh***,’” Knightley said. “‘Sl** sometimes. Particularly if I was with someone — a boyfriend, my brother or my dad. They were trying to get a reaction out of them — provoking people into punching them, so they could sue.”
She added that this behavior sometimes led to dangerous situations, with photographers forcing people off roads for better shots. “And then Britney shaved her head so it was like, ‘Great — we can push them into doing something f*** crazy,’” Knightley recalled.
To cope, Knightley said she went into survival mode. She began wearing the same clothes every day, including three pairs of identical jeans, a stripy T-shirt, and boots, giving the rest of her wardrobe away.
“If you’re still there, I’m not going. I’m not going to move,” she said, describing how she would stand still to frustrate photographers. At one point, she stood stock still for five hours. “It wasn’t a valuable shot to them if it was always me in the same clothes, standing still. There’s only so many times you can write, ‘Ooh, she’s wearing the same clothes,’ with a photo of me standing still. It gets boring.”
The pressure from fame became so intense that Knightley briefly considered quitting acting. With her family’s support, she left for London and began traveling across Europe by train, blending in with the crowds. “Museums, trains… no one expects to see you there. I was very scruffy, which they also wouldn’t have expected. You just don’t make eye contact, go a bit hunched. I kind of slithered,” she said.
Knightley reflected on how fame affected her as a young woman. “It was a brutal time to be a young woman in the public eye,” she said, noting that being stalked by men and blamed for it was part of the harsh reality.
