Keith Urban and Blake Shelton Team Up for “The Road” Music Series Featuring Billie Jo Jones
CBS launched a new music competition series called “The Road,” executive-produced by country stars Blake Shelton and Keith Urban, along with Taylor Sheridan, Lee Metzger, and David Glasser.
The show will follow 12 up-and-coming musicians as they get the chance to open for Urban at seven different venues across three states.
The series has a strong Oklahoma connection. Shelton, who is from Tishomingo, is one of the executive producers. Two Oklahoma performers, Blaine Bailey and Cody Hibbard, are among the contestants, and two of the filming locations are in the state.
“The Road” uses what CBS calls a “docu-follow” format, giving viewers a close-up look at the struggles and triumphs of the contestants, who are all singers, songwriters, and instrumentalists.
Shelton said in a statement, “I know a thing or two about singing competitions and what it’s like to chase a music dream and live life on tour. I’m looking forward to discovering new talent and giving them this platform.”
Since leaving his role as a coach on NBC’s “The Voice” in 2022, Shelton has been actively involved in selecting the contestants and venues for “The Road.” He also appears in several episodes of the series. Urban, a four-time Grammy winner, will act as the headliner, giving the emerging artists the opportunity to perform in front of live audiences.
Taylor Sheridan, best known for creating “Yellowstone,” said, “There is a revolution taking place in country music. Building a platform with Blake for the next leaders of that revolution is an incredibly exciting venture. No more shiny floors and studio audiences. This is where the rubber meets the road — literally. Get in the van, go to the next town and win the crowd. Do it enough, and you become the next leader. Simple as that.”
“The Road” promises an inside look at the challenging life of touring musicians. Fans will see what happens behind the scenes when talented artists hit the road, face a grueling schedule, and work to make a name for themselves in the music industry.
