Kelsey Grammer Opens up About His Return as Beast in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’
Marvel’s massive ensemble for ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ has generated plenty of excitement, but few reveals landed with quite the same emotional weight as Kelsey Grammer’s return as Beast. The actor first brought Hank McCoy to life back in 2006’s ‘X-Men: The Last Stand,’ reprised the role briefly for the epilogue of ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ in 2014, and made a surprise MCU debut with a post-credits cameo in 2023’s ‘The Marvels.’
That legacy made his confirmed casting for ‘Doomsday’ one of the more emotionally resonant reveals when the film’s massive roster was first unveiled. Rather than treating the role as just another paycheck franchise appearance, Grammer has since made clear just how personally meaningful stepping back into Beast’s shoes actually is to him.
Speaking about what draws him back to the character, Grammer offered a strikingly weighty comparison, describing Beast as “the Martin Luther King of the mutant community,” he told ComingSoon.net. He went on to describe the character as a man of stature and integrity who genuinely believes that actions define who a person is.
Grammer elaborated further on that framing, explaining that Beast tends to be slow to act, but once he’s fully committed to a fight, he gives no quarter and expects none in return. He called the character an amazing man to play, adding that he genuinely believes fans will be happy with how Beast is handled once ‘Doomsday’ finally hits theaters.
That kind of heartfelt reflection reinforces just how much creative weight Grammer places on Beast beyond the character’s comic relief or brawn, framing him instead as a figure of genuine moral conviction within the mutant community’s history. It’s a perspective that adds real depth to a character who’s spent nearly two decades bouncing between franchise reboots and cameo appearances.

Grammer won’t be alone in reuniting with old franchise co-stars for this outing. He’s joined by fellow Fox-era veterans Patrick Stewart as Professor X, Ian McKellen as Magneto, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, and James Marsden as Cyclops, alongside Channing Tatum reprising his Gambit role first introduced in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine.’
That reunion sits alongside an equally massive roster of MCU stars, including Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Letitia Wright, Simu Liu, and Paul Rudd, among many others, making ‘Doomsday’ one of the most heavily populated crossover events the franchise has ever attempted.
Grammer’s casting reveal also resonated deeply with Nicholas Hoult, who played a younger version of Beast across several previous X-Men films. Hoult previously told Entertainment Weekly that Grammer was the Beast he grew up watching as a kid, expressing genuine excitement about seeing him and the other returning original cast members brought into this new chapter of the franchise.
With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ set to hit theaters December 18, Grammer’s comments add yet another layer of anticipation to a film already carrying enormous expectations from fans of both the MCU and the original Fox X-Men era.
