Kendrick Lamar & ‘South Park’ Duo’s Movie Delayed with No New Date
Kendrick Lamar’s movie with South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone has run into another delay, and this time the setback has no new release date attached.
The project was filmed back in 2024 and has stayed mostly secret, but it was described early on as a dark comedy set around a young Black man working at a historical site in California. Chloe East and Celeste Octavia are also part of the cast.
Paramount had already moved the film more than once. It was first planned for summer 2025 and then pushed to March 2026. Reports at the time said the movie wasn’t finished, and people familiar with the situation said major rewrites had taken place. Those rewrites were said to shift the story from what was originally announced.
Now, only a few months before its most recent release date, the movie has been pulled off the studio calendar entirely, according to Word of Reel. This time, the studio’s reasoning points to the busy schedules of the team behind it. Lamar is on tour, while Parker and Stone are focused on new episodes of South Park. Because of that, the film will not arrive in early 2026 as previously expected.
The movie, eventually revealed to be titled Whitney Springs, has been in development for several years. Trey Parker is directing, and the script was written by Vernon Chatman.
The story mixes the past with the present and centers on a young man who works as a slave reenactor and later learns about his girlfriend’s family history. Brian Robbins, the head of Paramount, has described the screenplay in strong, positive terms.
There has also been confusion about how the film will be released. At one point, rumors suggested a streaming debut on Paramount+, though people close to the project pushed back on that. Later, a Paramount-linked marketing page confirmed the title and listed it as a musical comedy, adding even more questions about where the movie is headed.
Even with the delays, Paramount still controls its theatrical, home release, and TV rights, with streaming planned for Paramount+ after its run. But for now, the movie has no date in sight, leaving fans wondering when they will actually get to see it.
