Kenneth Branagh Says He Has Idea for Darker Final ‘Thor’ Film in the Style of ‘Logan’
Kenneth Branagh is looking back at his time on Thor, and he has now shared new thoughts about how the story could end if he ever returned for one last movie.
In an interview with Business Insider, the director spoke about his experience working on the first film and what he would do differently if he made another one. While he did not return for later sequels, he says he still has ideas for how Thor’s journey could come to a close.
Branagh explained that he would take the character in a more serious direction. Instead of focusing on humor, he said his version of a final film would feel closer to Logan, which is known for its darker and more emotional tone.
“Part of me would love to finish my relationship with that character,” Branagh said. “I’d always wanted to do more and indeed had a couple of ideas, more in the territory of James Mangold’s brilliant ‘Logan.’”
He made it clear that this idea would focus on giving Thor a proper ending. He described it as a final chapter that would feel meaningful and complete for the character.
“I would love to see Chris Hemsworth and the others have their own individual final story that takes Thor into a glorious twilight,” he said.
Branagh also shared that he had interest in continuing after the first film, but needed a break at the time. He said the process of making a Marvel movie was very demanding, especially after filming when the work continues in post-production.
“Marvel shoots are intense. Marvel postproduction is more intense — wildly exciting but super intense,” he explained.
Even though he stepped away, Branagh said he was happy to be asked back and still respects what the later films did with the character. He noted that the franchise explored different tones over time, including more comedy.
Now, years later, he still finds the idea of returning interesting, especially if it means telling a final story for Thor that feels more grounded and emotional.
“As a watcher, it’s very attractive,” Branagh said. “There’s something beautiful to be had out of arriving at a conclusion for that arc of those stories with those characters and those actors.”
At the same time, he admitted that the Marvel universe has already moved far ahead, and any future plans are likely already decided.
Still, his comments give a clear idea of how he sees Thor’s ending. Instead of another big, colorful adventure, he would aim for a more serious and personal story that focuses on the character’s final chapter.
This kind of ending could be a strong move. A darker and more emotional story worked very well for Logan, so it could also give Thor a more meaningful send-off after years of big action films. It would be very different from the recent tone, but that might be exactly what the character needs. What do you think? Would you want a darker final Thor movie like Logan, or should it stay fun and light? Share your thoughts in the comments.
