Keri Russell has become one of late-night television’s most reliable guests, and her friendship with Jimmy Fallon is a big part of the charm. Her visit to ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’ last October famously landed on the same night as Taylor Swift, and this time she returned with another busy season of ‘The Diplomat’ to promote.

It has been a big year for the star. Russell won Best Female Actor in a Drama Series at the Actor Awards for her role in the Netflix political drama, and she also earned an Emmy nomination for its third season.

That momentum carried her straight back to Studio 6B. On October 8, Russell made her 10th appearance on ‘The Tonight Show’ to talk about the fourth season of ‘The Diplomat’, arriving in a sleek black high-neck dress and strappy black heels.

The conversation quickly turned to her 50th birthday, which she celebrated in March. Russell explained that she was abroad finishing work on ‘The Diplomat’ at the time, so her partner Matthew Rhys arranged for some of her closest friends to join her for a 3-day getaway in the countryside.

The celebrations got a little out of hand. Russell admitted she ended up putting herself to bed early, and her friends later sent her a video of Fallon singing her happy birthday, which she missed entirely. Despite the chaotic start, she assured Fallon that turning 50 has been good to her so far.

Fallon also touched on the couple’s much-discussed Emmys night. The Tonight Show revealed that Russell and Rhys had an agreement not to thank each other in their Emmys speeches, which sheds new light on a moment that had social media buzzing.

Rhys made history on September 14 as the first actor to win 2 lead acting Emmys in the same year, for ‘Widow’s Bay’ and ‘The Beast in Me’. Viewers were quick to criticize him online for not mentioning Russell in either speech, though many fans pointed out that the pair have always teased each other this way.

Russell made it clear there were no hard feelings. Speaking to Extra, she said she and her family were screaming with excitement for him that night. The real reason for the visit, of course, is her return as Kate Wyler.

Created by Debora Cahn, ‘The Diplomat’ follows Kate as she navigates a high-stakes global crisis alongside her turbulent marriage to fellow insider Hal, played by Rufus Sewell. The new season continues the conflict between the Wylers and President Grace Penn, played by Allison Janney.

Janney and Bradley Whitford have been promoted to series regulars, along with Nana Mensah as White House chief of staff Billie Appiah. Russell has been teasing what lies ahead. “The power dynamic is constantly shifting,” she told Extra, explaining that Kate and Hal trade the upper hand from season to season, much like any long-term relationship.

She also revealed that the new episodes pick up exactly where the last season ended, and that she loves how this one wraps up. Production took the cast to Italy, with Russell wrapping filming in Florence after a stretch of late-night shoots.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, she described the role as freeing, noting that her character isn’t bound by the usual expectations to be elegant or perfectly appropriate. Fans won’t have to wait long to see the results. ‘The Diplomat’ season 4 premieres on Netflix on October 15, and the first 3 seasons are already available to stream for anyone who needs to catch up.
