Kevin Feige Hints Florence Pugh’s Yelena Will Anchor ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova has gone from a supporting spy to one of the most important heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ may cement that rise. The character debuted in 2021’s ‘Black Widow’, later appeared in Disney+’s ‘Hawkeye’, and took center stage in ‘Thunderbolts*’.

Back in 2021, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said Yelena would carry the memory of Natasha Romanoff, but in her own way as her own character. Five years later, it’s clear Marvel has been steadily building her into a central figure.

Feige has been teasing Yelena’s importance for months. During an appearance at Bilibili World in Shanghai in July, he told fans that anyone who loves Yelena should wait for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ because she plays a big part in it, according to GeekTyrant.

He also hinted fans might see her a little sooner in the movies, which many took as confirmation of a cameo in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’. Wikipedia now lists that film among Pugh’s Yelena appearances.

Now Feige is going even further. In Florence Pugh’s new Vanity Fair cover story, the Marvel boss hinted that Yelena will serve as an anchor throughout ‘Avengers: Doomsday’. Fans immediately ran with the idea. One reply simply declared “This is my movie” on Yelena’s behalf, capturing just how excited audiences are to see her at the heart of the story.

The cover story is part of Vanity Fair’s October 2026 issue, which marks the return of The New Establishment, with Pugh celebrated as a Renaissance Woman. The issue also features Sam Altman, Larry Ellison, Gavin Newsom, Donald Glover, Ryan Coogler, and Bad Bunny, among others.

Marvel has already given fans a taste of Yelena’s big moments. one outlet reported that the film’s July trailer included a battle in which Rebecca Romijn’s Mystique transforms into Yelena’s own likeness, forcing her into a confrontation with a shapeshifted version of herself.

That clash hints at how directly the MCU’s heroes will collide with Fox’s ‘X-Men’ characters. Yelena is also expected to lead her team, now renamed the New Avengers, alongside Bucky, US Agent, played by Wyatt Russell, and Bob, played by Lewis Pullman, according to Geek Culture.

Pugh has spoken openly about where she wants the character to go. She has said she hopes audiences see a more open and empathetic side of Yelena when she returns in ‘Doomsday’, according to Malay Mail.

She’s also shown a fearless commitment to the role. For ‘Thunderbolts*’, Pugh base-jumped off Merdeka 118 in Kuala Lumpur, the world’s second-tallest building, after repeatedly emailing Feige to convince Marvel to let her do the stunt, as The Independent reported.

Beyond Marvel, Pugh is having a banner year. She currently stars in Netflix’s adaptation of John Steinbeck’s ‘East of Eden’, according to Showbiz411, and her Vanity Fair cover has only added to her momentum.

With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ arriving on December 18, fans won’t have to wait much longer to see just how central Yelena becomes. If Feige’s hints are any indication, the former assassin could emerge as the emotional core of Marvel’s biggest team-up yet.
