Kevin Feige Just Gave Kingpin Fans a Reason to Believe in a Spider-Man Showdown
‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ is barely a day away from its theatrical bow, and the press tour has already produced its share of headlines. Between director Destin Daniel Cretton’s approach to the character and glowing early reactions, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige and Sony Pictures Entertainment chairwoman Amy Pascal have been making the rounds sharing their verdict on the film. Amid all that promotion, one offhand comment about a longtime MCU sticking point has fans buzzing again.
For years, the idea of Wilson Fisk squaring off against Tom Holland’s web slinger on the big screen has felt like a pipe dream. Sony and Marvel Studios share the rights to the Kingpin character, and while Vincent D’Onofrio has built a commanding presence within the MCU on television, he has yet to appear in a feature film. D’Onofrio previously revealed that the rights issue for his character kept him from appearing in projects beyond his TV work, a claim that seemed to close the door on any live action crossover with Spider-Man for good.
That is why Feige’s newest comments landed as such a surprise. According to a report from CBR, Feige told Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that the rights issues surrounding Kingpin appearing in a Spider-Man movie are not as complicated as D’Onofrio has previously suggested. Feige downplayed the concerns entirely while promoting ‘Brand New Day’, framing the situation as manageable rather than a dead end.
The history behind the tangle is genuinely messy. Kingpin’s rights have historically been split between Sony, Fox, and Marvel, and a 2014 deal reportedly confirmed Sony could use the character in Spider-Man films while Marvel could use him in Daredevil projects. Kingpin first appeared as a Spider-Man villain in the comics, which may explain why Sony still holds the film rights even though Marvel controls his television appearances, a split that let him show up as the antagonist in Sony’s animated ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’.
That patchwork ownership is exactly what has made Kingpin such an outlier compared to other Marvel Netflix characters. Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock managed to cross over into ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’, but Fisk has never gotten the same opportunity on the big screen despite his ties to both franchises. Fans have long pointed to that discrepancy as proof that Marvel and Sony could find a workaround for Kingpin if they truly wanted to, and Feige’s latest remarks suggest that theory may finally be gaining traction behind the scenes.
Whether any of this translates into an actual appearance remains to be seen, since nothing about a concrete plan has been confirmed. Still, the timing is notable. Feige made these comments while the studio heads were mid tour promoting a film that takes place four years after the events of ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ and follows Peter Parker living in a world that no longer remembers him, a narrative shift that could open the door to new street level threats down the line.
