Key ‘Doctor Strange’ Star Hints at Epic Return in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’: “Who wouldn’t like a chair?”

Chiwetel Ejiofor has fans buzzing after a cryptic comment about his potential return as Baron Mordo in the upcoming Marvel film Avengers: Doomsday.

When asked on the red carpet by Flip Your Wig if he’d reprise his role, Ejiofor grinned and said, “We’ll see … Who wouldn’t like a chair?” His playful response has sparked speculation about whether the sorcerer will appear in the multiverse epic.

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Ejiofor’s Mordo is the Sorcerer Supreme and an Illuminati member, a role he took on after the death of Supreme Strange. In Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Mordo survived a deadly attack by Scarlet Witch that killed his Illuminati teammates.

His history with Doctor Strange and his reality-bending expertise make him a strong candidate for Avengers: Doomsday, though Marvel Studios has not yet confirmed his involvement.

Avengers: Doomsday, set for release on December 18, 2026, is shaping up to be a massive crossover event. The film unites the Avengers, Wakandans, Fantastic Four, X-Men, and New Avengers to battle Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr. in a surprising shift from his Iron Man role. The cast includes returning stars like Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Paul Rudd, Florence Pugh, Tom Hiddleston, Vanessa Kirby, Pedro Pascal, Patrick Stewart, and Ian McKellen.

Directed by the Russo brothers, who helmed Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, the film is written by Stephen McFeely. Production began in April 2025 at Pinewood Studios in England, with additional filming in Bahrain. The movie kicks off Marvel’s Phase Six, with a sequel, Secret Wars, planned for December 17, 2027. Announced in July 2024, Doomsday promises a multiverse showdown that could easily include a character like Mordo.

Ejiofor’s coy response has fueled hope that Mordo’s story isn’t over. Whether he’s hinting at a confirmed role or just teasing fans, his comment keeps the excitement high for what’s next in the MCU.

Ejiofor’s cryptic comment is a classic Marvel move, keeping fans guessing while building hype. Mordo’s return would make sense given his ties to Doctor Strange and the multiverse, but I hope Marvel gives him a bigger role this time to explore his complex character.

The star-packed cast and the Russo brothers’ return make Doomsday a must-watch, but I’m curious how they’ll balance so many heroes against Downey’s Doctor Doom. What do you think about Mordo’s possible comeback and the Doomsday lineup? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
