Few characters capture the twisted showmanship of Panem quite like Caesar Flickerman, the ever-smiling host who turns the Capitol’s deadliest spectacle into prime-time entertainment. Stanley Tucci made the role iconic in the original ‘Hunger Games’ films, and now Kieran Culkin is stepping in to play a younger version of the character in ‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’.

The prequel explores Panem 24 years before Katniss Everdeen’s story, starting on the morning of the reaping for the 50th Hunger Games. Known as the Second Quarter Quell, this edition is the biggest Games yet, with twice as many tributes as usual.

As the film’s release draws closer, a fresh image has given fans their best look yet at Culkin in the role. The still shows the Oscar and Emmy winner beaming in an ornate blue jacket with gold embroidery, black gloves, and a slicked-back hairstyle with a thin mustache.

Kieran Culkin’s ‘Sunrise On The Reaping’ Transformation Has Fans Doing A Double Take

He holds a long silver microphone while raising 1 finger in a theatrical flourish, with a crowd seated behind him. The image perfectly captures the polished, crowd-pleasing persona that defines Caesar’s role in the Capitol’s propaganda machine.

The new look follows the release of 14 character posters from Lionsgate earlier this month. In his portrait, Culkin’s Caesar appears in blue clothing with a bow tie, set against warm floral framing.

When Culkin’s casting was announced, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group co-president Erin Westerman praised his scene-stealing presence and charm as a perfect fit for the character. She also acknowledged that while Tucci made Caesar unforgettable, Culkin would make the role entirely his own.

Producer Nina Jacobson also highlighted his magnetism, wit, and unpredictability. She noted that a host like Caesar transforms brutality into entertainment, and that an actor as layered as Culkin ensures audiences can’t look away.

Culkin joined the franchise during one of the strongest stretches of his career. Around the time of his casting, he was also starring on Broadway in a sold-out run of ‘Glengarry Glen Ross’ alongside Bob Odenkirk and Bill Burr.

Culkin is part of one of the biggest casts in franchise history. Joseph Zada leads as a 16-year-old Haymitch Abernathy from District 12, a role previously played by Woody Harrelson in the original films.

Whitney Peak plays Haymitch’s girlfriend, Lenore Dove Baird, while Mckenna Grace portrays fellow tribute, Maysilee Donner. Ralph Fiennes takes on President Snow, with Jesse Plemons as Plutarch Heavensbee and Elle Fanning as Effie Trinket.

The ensemble also includes Glenn Close as Drusilla, Maya Hawke as Wiress, Billy Porter as Magno, Lili Taylor as Mags, and Kelvin Harrison Jr. as Beetee. Francis Lawrence returns to direct, having helmed every installment since ‘Catching Fire’. The screenplay comes from Billy Ray and Michael Lesslie, adapting Suzanne Collins’ novel.

The book itself was a massive hit, selling 1.5 million copies in its first week across the U.S., U.K., Ireland, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Principal photography took place between July and November 2025 across locations in Spain and Germany.

‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’ arrives in theaters and IMAX on November 20. With a dazzling new Caesar ready to welcome audiences back to the arena, anticipation for Haymitch’s origin story is only growing.

Early fan reactions to Culkin’s casting have been enthusiastic, with many praising the chaotic energy he brings to the role. If this new image is any indication, his take on Panem’s most charismatic host could become one of the film’s biggest talking points.

Can Kieran Culkin live up to Stanley Tucci’s iconic Caesar Flickerman in ‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’?
