Whether you’re on Team Mary Jane or Team Gwen Stacy, you gotta admit Kirsten Dunst nailed her role as Mary Jane. She played her in Raimi’s ‘Spider-Man’ trilogy, which is still her biggest moneymaker.
Remember that upside-down kiss scene in the 2002 ‘Spider-Man’? Iconic, right? Well, Dunst doesn’t see it as super romantic as you might.
On a recent episode of the Jonathan Ross Show, Dunst talked about filming that scene and emphasized how rough it was for her.
I remember Sam Raimi (director) giving me a book of famous kisses to be inspired but also he really wanted to make it special even though it was kind of miserable actually doing it.
Dunst mentioned that Tobey had a tough time breathing during the scene due to the circumstances with the weather.
It was pouring with rain, freezing, Tobey couldn’t breathe so it was almost like I was resuscitating him.
The actress has mentioned this multiple times. Despite the movie being successful at the box office and with critics, filming wasn’t all smooth sailing. Tensions between Franco and Maguire on set added to the difficulty. Franco developed feelings for Dunst during filming, but she was already dating Maguire. Franco also felt Raimi favored his co-stars over him.
Tobey and Kirsten Dunst became a couple around that time. I had a crush on Kirsten, and I think I was upset about that as well. Tobey was mad at me for a while. By the second film we were cool, but that’s another reason I felt hurt, with you giving Tobey all the attention.
