Kit Harington Just Gave the Most Honest Answer Yet About Black Knight’s MCU Future

Marvel’s post-credits scenes have built entire fandoms around characters who barely get a few minutes of screen time, and few teases have lingered quite as long as Dane Whitman’s transformation setup in ‘Eternals.’ Five years after that ominous glimpse of the Ebony Blade, fans are still waiting for any sign of forward movement.

That wait has only grown more uncertain given how much turmoil has surrounded the character’s connected projects since then. Between a shelved ‘Blade’ film and a franchise that’s largely moved on from ‘Eternals‘ altogether, Kit Harington’s future as Black Knight has increasingly felt like one of Marvel’s more forgotten threads.

Kit Harington gave an update on Black Knight’s future in the MCU, and it wasn’t exactly encouraging news. “I don’t think there’s any plan,” he said, via MovieWeb. “I think he’s a wicked character. It’s such a great parable of addiction… We’ll see. I don’t know if there’s any plan.”

That comment builds on Harington’s fuller explanation of what draws him to the character in the first place. He described the Ebony Blade’s curse as central to what makes Dane Whitman compelling, noting that “the more he kills, the worse he gets, the more addicted” he becomes, framing Black Knight as someone who “starts good, goes bad.”

That description lines up closely with the character’s comic book roots. In Marvel Comics, Dane Whitman inherits a cursed sword forged to rival Excalibur, one that slowly corrupts its wielder into a bloodthirsty killer even as it grants him tremendous power, eventually leading him to join the Avengers despite that darker undercurrent.

Harington’s ‘Eternals’ cameo ended with a memorable tease, showing Dane touching the Ebony Blade while an off-screen voice, later revealed to be Mahershala Ali’s Blade, asks if he’s ready. That scene set expectations high for a quick follow-up, but Marvel has since shelved nearly every other storyline from the 2021 film, which underperformed at the box office with a $402 million worldwide total.

Complicating matters further, Ali’s own ‘Blade’ reboot, the project Dane’s transformation seemed most directly tied to, has gone through repeated behind-the-scenes overhauls since being announced back in 2019. With that film’s own path forward still uncertain, any potential crossover involving Black Knight has effectively been left in limbo alongside it.

Harington has remained open to returning if Marvel ever calls, previously telling other outlets that he’d be excited to revisit the character given how strong he still finds the underlying concept of a good man turned bad by his own power. Still, without any concrete plans on Marvel’s end, that possibility remains entirely out of his hands.

For now, Black Knight sits in the same limbo as several other dangling MCU threads, waiting for a studio that has plenty of other priorities occupying its immediate future. Whether Dane Whitman ever gets his full transformation moment may depend entirely on how Marvel eventually resolves the tangled state of its ‘Blade’ project.
