The Dark Knight’s most punishing comic book saga has been getting the big animated treatment this year. Warner Bros. and DC have been adapting the iconic ‘Batman: Knightfall’ storyline as a 3-part animated movie event, and the latest chapter, ‘Knightquest’, is now edging closer to release.

The trilogy kicked off with ‘Batman: Knightfall Part 1: Knightfall’, which arrived on digital on August 25 and earned excellent reviews, holding a 92% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The first film also reportedly debuted to a rapturous reception at the Annecy Festival before reaching fans at home.

Now, the hype machine is rolling again. A motion poster for ‘Batman: Knightfall Part 2: Knightquest’ has just dropped, teasing that the sequel is coming soon to digital. The short clip leans hard into chaotic energy, with a blurred, high-impact shot of an armored Batman sporting glowing red eyes and gold accents bursting across the frame.

The bold yellow title treatment sits at the center, making it clear this is a very different kind of Dark Knight. That aggressive imagery fits the story perfectly. In the official trailer, Azrael delivers ruthless and violent justice to criminals, starting out in Batman’s classic cape and cowl before moving into a suit of Batman armor.

The sequel adapts the middle part of the famed 3-part comic storyline from 1993 and 1994. Batman lies broken at the hands of Bane, and with Bruce Wayne paralyzed from the waist down, a new successor must step up to defend Gotham City.

That successor is Jean-Paul Valley, also known as Azrael, but the big question is whether his more violent methods will be enough to stop Bane. In the trailer, Bane declares dominion over Gotham and releases many of Batman’s greatest villains back onto the streets.

The trailer also shows a wheelchair-bound Bruce telling Dick Grayson, Tim Drake, and Jean-Paul that Jean-Paul will be the new Batman. Dark Knight News pointed out that Bane’s apparent plan to take over or destroy Gotham seems to be a deviation from the comics, where the villain didn’t have a concrete plan after defeating Batman.

The returning cast is stacked. Anson Mount voices Batman and Bruce Wayne, Michael Mando plays Bane, and Pablo Schreiber takes on Jean-Paul Valley and Azrael. They’re joined by Jack Griffo as Tim Drake and Robin, Bruce Boxleitner as Commissioner Gordon, Simon Templeman as Alfred Pennyworth, and Toks Olagundoye as Shondra Kinsolving.

Behind the scenes, Jeff Wamester directs from a screenplay by Jeremy Adams. Like its predecessor, the sequel carries an R rating. That should give the filmmakers plenty of room to show just how far Azrael is willing to go in his brutal take on vigilante justice.

Warner Bros. has yet to lock in an official release date beyond the “coming soon” tease, though the film is expected to arrive before the end of the year. The first trailer landed back on Batman Day, September 19, so the motion poster suggests the marketing push is picking up speed.

Based on DC’s past release patterns, The Direct projected that the sequel could hit digital platforms around 3.5 months after the first film, possibly on or around December 8. Until Warner Bros. confirms anything, that remains an educated guess. The saga won’t stop there either. The third and final chapter, ‘KnightsEnd’, is expected to arrive in early 2027, bringing the full ‘Knightfall’ event to a close.

Are you excited to see Azrael take over as Batman in ‘Knightquest’?
