‘Kraven the Hunter’: Plot, Cast, Release Date, and Latest Updates
Sony’s Spider-Man Universe had a good idea at the start: bring together key characters from the Spiderverse. But they forgot something important: Spider-Man himself. Despite a few movies already, the universe hasn’t been received well, except for the ‘Venom’ series, which is ending this October.
The latest disappointment was ‘Madame Web.’ This December, we’re getting a movie about one of Spider-Man’s top villains, Kraven the Hunter. Let’s see what we know about it.
The movie will be rated “R”
We don’t have much info on the movie’s plot, but the villain was supposed to be in it earlier. Execs held off because his stories are pretty intense for older viewers. The movie will likely be rated “R,” but we’re still unsure which story it’ll use. In August 2018, Richard Wenk was hired to write the script, following his success with ‘The Equalizer 2.’ Sony wanted to introduce Kraven to audiences and explore who he’d hunt, since Spider-Man wasn’t an option due to the MCU deal.
The movie’s audience will depend on how people react to ‘Venom’s’ darker vibe. Wenk wants to stick to the character’s comic roots, even planning a face-off between Kraven and Spider-Man. He’s also thinking about using the ‘Kraven’s Last Hunt’ story, maybe in this movie or a future one, like how ‘Kill Bill’ was split.
The big roles in the movie were disclosed
The cast for the upcoming Kraven the Hunter film includes:
- Aaron Taylor-Johnson plays Sergei Kravinoff, showing him as someone who cares about nature.
- Ariana DeBose is Calypso, Kraven’s romantic interest and a voodoo priestess.
- Fred Hechinger is Dmitri Smerdyakov, Kraven’s half-brother who’s skilled at disguises, known as Chameleon.
- Christopher Abbott portrays the Foreigner, a hired killer.
- Alessandro Nivola becomes Aleksei Sytsevich, also called Rhino, a Russian soldier who can turn into a human-rhino mix.
- Russell Crowe acts as Nikolai Kravinoff, Kraven’s distant dad.
- Levi Miller’s part is still a secret.
The movie got a release date update recently
Kraven the Hunter will hit theaters in the United States on December 13, 2024, in both IMAX and premium large formats (PLMs). Originally set for January 13, 2023, then moved to October 6, 2023, and finally to August 30, 2024.
