Kristen Bell Teases ‘Frozen III’ Will Finally Unlock the Mystery of the Northern Lights
It has been a long road back to Arendelle for Disney fans. ‘Frozen 2’ left the sisters on drastically new paths, with Anna crowned Queen of Arendelle, and for years Kristen Bell could only jokingly “announce” a third film with zero authority during her late-night appearances.
That changed when Jennifer Lee took the stage at D23 last year and confirmed that ‘Frozen III’ and ‘Frozen 4’ were both in development. Since then, Bell has shared that she’s back in the recording booth as Anna, and the sequel is slated to arrive in 2027.
Now, the actress is offering a closer look at where the story is heading. Bell revealed that ‘Frozen III’ will dig into what the Northern Lights actually mean, sending the characters far beyond their familiar kingdom.
“They do expose us to a new adventure, a new land, where things are not as they are in Arendelle,” Bell said in a recent video interview. Her comments line up neatly with everything Disney has teased about the sequel so far.
That mysterious glow has been central to the film’s marketing from the start. Concept art previously showed the sisters traveling toward a glitzy new palace crafted within the Northern Lights in the sky.

The clearest picture of the plot came at D23 in August. The first look opened right after Anna and Kristoff tied the knot, with Elsa noticing some unusual Northern Lights once the wedding celebrations wound down.
From there, the trio and Olaf venture into a new frozen land filled with icy butterflies and a dark, mysterious new character. Disney’s official description also promises the wedding of the century in Arendelle, with Queen Anna walking down the aisle before joining Elsa on a magical journey full of unknown challenges.

Bell, Idina Menzel and Josh Gad also showed up at the D23 event to sing Disney songs for the crowd, proving good sports when their music and in-ear monitors malfunctioned. It was a fitting reminder that the core voice cast, including Jonathan Groff as Kristoff, is fully back together.
The idea of a “new land” where things aren’t what they seem has sent fans straight into theory mode. Many are wondering whether the shadowy newcomer could be a nod to the original concept of an evil Elsa, which was scrapped during development of the first film.
The speculation hasn’t slowed down since Bell’s latest comments. Under the post sharing her quote, some fans were already asking for the film to reveal who Elsa’s villainous counterpart is and why she resembles Elsa in the first place.

If that theory holds up, it would mark a major shift for the franchise. The first look suggests the sequel may introduce its first clear-cut villain, a big change for a series that has mostly focused on internal struggles and family bonds.
The creative team behind the songs is returning as well. Josh Gad has said that Bobby Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez wrote the music again, revealing he had heard 2 of the songs and calling the new film the funniest of the 3 he has recorded.
Bell herself has been candid about her commitment to the franchise. Earlier this year, she pushed back on reports that she had signed a $60 million deal for the sequels, saying much of what was reported was inaccurate, while stressing how grateful she is to keep playing Anna.
With its wedding opener, a mysterious new realm and a potential villain lurking in the Northern Lights, ‘Frozen III’ is shaping up to be the most ambitious chapter yet. Bell’s latest tease suggests the answers waiting beyond Arendelle could change everything the sisters thought they knew.
