Kristen Wiig will bring the fan-favorite character Roboto to life in the upcoming live-action Masters of the Universe movie. Entertainment Weekly confirmed that Wiig will voice the mechanical warrior, a role that has been voiced in the past by Justin Long, Alan Oppenheimer, and Michael Donovan.

The Hollywood Reporter first revealed the casting on Friday, noting that the big-budget film is now in post-production. Directed by Travis Knight, known for Bumblebee, the movie is based on the Mattel toy line that first launched in 1982.

The toys were accompanied by comics and eventually inspired the 1983 He-Man and the Masters of the Universe animated series, along with dozens of other toys, series, and films over the years.

Roboto was added to the Masters of the Universe toys in 1985 and appeared in the mini-comic The Battle of Roboto, where he was built by Man-at-Arms. The character is known for his transparent metal body, high intelligence, and a cybernetically enhanced heart that allows him to feel emotions.

Kristen Wiig joins a strong cast that includes Nicholas Galitzine as He-Man, Camila Mendes as Teela, Jared Leto as Skeletor, and Alison Brie as Evil-Lyn. Galitzine shared on Instagram in June that filming had wrapped, saying, “Well, that’s a wrap on Masters of the Universe. It has been an honour shouldering the responsibility of playing Adam and He-Man. It’s been the role of a lifetime and I put everything into it.” He added, “There’s not much I can show you, but I am so proud of the movie we’ve made. Thanks to our amazing cast and crew for all your hard work.”

The rest of the cast includes Idris Elba as Man-at-Arms, Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson as Malcolm/Fisto, Morena Baccarin as the Sorceress, James Purefoy as King Randor, and Charlotte Riley as Queen Marlena. Skeletor’s henchmen will be played by Sam C. Wilson as Trap Jaw, Kojo Attah as Tri-Klops, and Hafthor Bjornsson as Goat Man. The screenplay is written by Chris Butler, who worked on Missing Link and ParaNorman, based on earlier drafts by David Callaham and Aaron and Adam Nee.

Kristen Wiig has plenty of experience in voice work. She has lent her voice to characters in Despicable Me, How to Train Your Dragon, and TV shows like The Simpsons, Big Mouth, Bless the Harts, and Sausage Party: Foodtopia.

Masters of the Universe hasn’t had a live-action film since 1987, which starred Dolph Lundgren as He-Man and Frank Langella as Skeletor. That film is also remembered for helping launch Courteney Cox’s career.

Fans can look forward to the new Masters of the Universe movie when it hits theaters on June 5, 2026.
