Houseki no kuni, called Land of the Lustrous in English, is a manga series written and drawn by Haruko Ichikawa, published by Kōdanshasince 2012. Its anime adaptation was directed and written by Takahiko Kyogoku and Toshiya Ono respectively, and began airing on October 7, 2017, ending on December 23 of the same year with 12 episodes. It was produced by Computer Graphics (CG) at Orange Animation Studio. The story follows the Houseki (Gems) – immortal humanoid lifeforms made of precious gems – who defend themselves against the Lunarians, beings who hunt them to make decorations out of the gems. Phos is the youngest of the Housekis, and she is given the job of making an encyclopedia as she is too frail to fight. In this article, we are going to discuss the potential second season of Land of the Lustrous.

The second season of Land of the Lustrous still hasn’t been confirmed yet. The first season aired five years ago and the manga series is still ongoing, so there is a good possibility that Land of the Lustrous could return for a second season, despite the hiatus. Having said all of this, Land of the Lustrous is a fairly popular series and based on all the known facts, a second season is not impossible. We just don’t know when it’ll happen.

The rest of this article will bring you all the known and unknown information related to a potential season 2 of Land of the Lustrous. You’re going to find out about its potential release date, whether there is a trailer, what the story could be about, and much more about this extremely popular new anime series.

Land of the Lustrous Season 2 release date

Land of the Lustrous was largely influenced by Buddhism. This is seen in the characters, especially Master Vajra. He constantly wears the traditional robe of Japanese Buddhist monks. Additionally, his real name is Ksitigarbha, making him the namesake of one of the Eight Great Bodhisattvas. Ksitigarbha is considered in Japan as the protector of children, who here can be assimilated into jewels.

Faced with Vajra, the Selenians also had their share of religious inspiration. Their way of appearing in the sky, on their tasks, recalls the Japanese raigō: after death, Buddha and many musicians would appear on a cloud. After a fight, when the main moonkin of a task is cut in half, its interiors reveal a pattern that is reminiscent of the lotus, a flower that symbolizes purity in the Buddhist tradition.

The concept of the Selenians could also come from the Apsaras, dancers and musicians of Japanese folklore from Hinduism, who also travel on clouds. The very idea for the manga originated from his reading of sutras in high school.

The author picked phosphophyllite as the main character, because this stone seems to her to have the perfect characteristics for a main character: precious and very beautiful, but fragile and unusable in jewelry making.

The manga has been published since December 2012 by Kodansha in the monthly magazine Monthly Afternoon. As of December 2020, eleven volumes have been released in Japan, and several chapters have yet to be compiled into tankōbon volumes. Added to this is an artbook published in 2017 exclusively in Japan, Pseudomorph of Love.

An anime adaptation was made by Orange studio and airs in Japan on AT-X, MBS and TV Tokyo since October 7, 2017. An exhibition was dedicated to the series in the Yūrakuchō district in Tokyo from January to February 2018, as a way to commemorate the anniversary of the release of the first DVDs and Blu-rays. It focuses exclusively on the adaptation, revealing elements of the storyboard, character design and sets, and 3D animation material, all embellished with notes from the production team.

As you can see, the future of Land of the Lustrous is quite bright, mainly because there is a lot of interest and more material to adapt. The series is very popular and we’ll just have to see how the manga keeps doing to make any proper predictions about the potential continuation of the series. In any case, the earliest we could see a potential second season is late 2023, but we’d have to get some confirmation on the future during 2022 or 2023.

Land of the Lustrous Season 2 trailer

You now know all the facts and our thoughts related to Land of the Lustrous Season 2, which means that you’ve probably deduced for yourselves that there is no trailer for the second season of Land of the Lustrous. This is because we do not know whether there will even be a second season of the show, which means that a trailer might not appear at all. But, based on all the information we have, there is nothing indicating that Land of the Lustrous won’t be returning.

As we have said, Land of the Lustrous is a very solid candidate for a return. The anime has received acclaim from both professional critics and the otaku community, and is very popular, with the manga still being published. After that, we have to wait and see whether there are actual plans for a continuation before we can make a proper prediction.

Taking into account everything we’ve said, a proper trailer for Land of the Lustrous is unlikely to come out this year, but it might appear sometime during 2023. The earliest we could see a trailer is 2023, but we would have to get confirmation of a second season sometime during this or early next year for that to happen.

Land of the Lustrous Season 2 plot

At this moment, we do not know where the second season of Land of the Lustrous could take us because we don’t know how many chapters of the manga the season could potentially adapt. Namely, due to a lack of information in general, we have absolutely no clue how far the second season might go if it even happens. What follows is a general overview of the show’s plot.

The story takes place in the distant future where humanity has disappeared due to the successive fall of six meteorites on Earth. Instead, a new form of life has developed: jewels, who arehumanoid in appearance. They are 28 immortal beings who live under the protection of Master Vajra. However, despite the presence of their master, the jewels must face almost daily attacks from the Selenians, inhabitants of the Moon who wish to transform them into trinkets and ornaments.

As a result, the jewels are forced to adopt a particular organization in which each is assigned a specific role: fighter, doctor, craftsman, tailor, etc. They usually work in pairs. The main character is Phosphophyllite, the youngest jewel. Reputed to be weak because of his very low hardness and his clumsiness, he nevertheless wishes to become a fighter more than anything in order to be useful to the community.

Master Vajra opposes this and then assigns him the task of writing a natural history. Despite reluctance, he tackles this task and after being attacked by surprise one night, he meets Cinnabar, an isolated and unintentionally dangerous jewel, who is in charge of the nocturnal rounds alone. Touched by her condition, Phos promises to find her a more useful and fun role.

Land of the Lustrous Season 2 cast

It’s still too early for us to discuss a potential second season of Land of the Lustrous in terms of cast and characters, simply because we do not know whether there will even be a second season. But, seeing how we know that the series is going to have a more-or-less fixed cast, we really don’t expect to see too many changes in the structure of season two, if it ever happens. Now, the main characters that have appeared in season one, likely to return for a second season, include:
