Director Stephen Kay is giving ‘Landman’ fans something they have been craving since the Season 2 finale wrapped, a genuine reason to believe the wait for Season 3 might be shorter than expected. Speaking at The Hollywood Reporter’s Directors in Focus event, Kay revealed that post-production is already underway alongside the shoot itself, telling the outlet that the team is editing as they go and that the new season will “hopefully be out soon.”

Kay confirmed he would return to work in about a month, aligning with earlier reports that production on the third season would kick off in May, and noted that the pace of the concurrent cut and shoot workflow signals an accelerated pipeline. That kind of overlap between filming and editing is not standard for a prestige drama, and it strongly suggests Paramount is keen to keep the show’s momentum rolling without a lengthy gap between installments.

Co-creator Christian Wallace had previously told The Hollywood Reporter that the team is “in a groove,” acknowledging they are running slightly later than the previous two seasons, largely because production will push through the punishing Texas summer heat. Both Seasons 1 and 2 launched in mid-November of their respective years, and if the schedule holds, a late 2026 premiere on Paramount+ looks plausible.

The urgency to deliver is understandable. The Season 2 finale drew 15.8 million viewers within 48 hours of its release, making it the most-watched original series finale in Paramount+ history, and viewership of the Season 2 premiere was nearly three times that of the Season 1 debut. The Season 2 premiere alone pulled 9.2 million views worldwide in its first few days, setting the biggest season or series premiere record the streamer has ever seen.

Kay, who directed the entire second season after sharing duties across Season 1, has become the creative anchor of the series behind the camera, and his involvement in Season 3 appears locked in as well. At Deadline’s Contenders TV panel, Kay reflected on what makes the show connect so broadly, saying, “We love each other, and you can sort of feel it when you watch the show. There’s a whole lot of heart.”

The series was renewed for a third season in December 2025, and filming for Season 3 may commence in May 2026. Billy Bob Thornton, who stars as oil company fixer Tommy Norris, has committed to staying with the show for as long as he is able, telling The Hollywood Reporter he wants to do ‘Landman’ for the duration of his multi-year deal. With the numbers this show keeps delivering and post-production already in motion, the West Texas oil boom is nowhere near running dry.
