‘Lanterns’ Episode 6 Teaser Finally Returns to the Mystery Fans Have Been Waiting Weeks For

HBO’s ‘Lanterns‘ has spent its first five episodes patiently building two very different stories at once, pairing veteran space cop Hal Jordan with rookie John Stewart while slowly unraveling a murder mystery with cosmic stakes. That deliberate, slow-burn approach has defined the series since its August premiere, but it’s also left one major thread hanging for weeks.

The show’s very first episode ended with a gut punch, revealing that Hal Jordan, played by Kyle Chandler, is dead in the present-day 2026 timeline, discovered by Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart alongside a Green Lantern ring conspicuously missing from the scene. Rather than following up on that mystery immediately, though, the series pivoted almost entirely to a 2016 flashback storyline set in Rushville, Nebraska, following Hal’s training of his newest recruit.

That flashback arc finally wrapped in episode five, which also cleared up why Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner, rather than Hal himself, was the Green Lantern seen protecting Metropolis in last year’s ‘Superman’ film. Now, the newly released teaser for episode six, titled “Bad Optics,” confirms the series is finally jumping back to the present day to tackle the murder mystery that’s been sitting unresolved since the premiere.

According to the preview, John Stewart will begin actively investigating his former mentor’s death, picking up a thread the show deliberately set aside while it worked through the Rushville backstory. That shift comes right on the heels of episode five’s ending, in which John refused to formally join the Green Lantern Corps after witnessing firsthand how the ring had corrupted Hal over time.

The teaser also offers a telling glimpse into how Rushville feels about the Lanterns these days, showing the Lantern Signal, clearly modeled after Gotham’s own Bat-Signal, defaced with graffiti. That detail suggests the town’s relationship with its cosmic protectors has soured considerably by the time the story catches up to the present.

‘Lanterns’ episode six is set to premiere Sunday, September 20, at 9 p.m. ET and PT, continuing the same weekly Sunday night slot the series has held since its debut, airing simultaneously on HBO and HBO Max. International viewers will see it at staggered times depending on region, with UK audiences catching it around 2 a.m. BST Monday on Sky and NOW, Canadian viewers getting it at 9 p.m. ET Sunday on Crave, and Australian fans able to stream it around 11 a.m. AEST Monday on HBO Max or Foxtel.

With only eight episodes total in the season, episode six marks the final installment before the show heads into its two-part finale, putting real pressure on this hour to tighten up the threads that have been unspooling since the premiere. Notably, the present-day timeline is set roughly a year after the events of both ‘Superman’ and ‘Peacemaker’ Season 2, tying ‘Lanterns’ more directly into the broader DC Universe than its Rushville-set flashbacks have so far.

For a show that’s built its identity on patience rather than spectacle, finally returning to Hal’s murder feels like a meaningful turning point heading into the season’s homestretch. Given how much groundwork the 2016 timeline just spent five episodes establishing, fans now have real reason to expect those two storylines to start colliding in ways that could reshape everything they thought they understood about Hal’s fate.
